Air America Radio Signs Franken for 2 More Years The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) - Air America Radio, a startup radio network that offers liberal talk and commentary, has signed a new contract with comedian Al Franken to stay on as its lead personality for at least two more years, the company announced Wednesday.

Air America also said that Rob Glaser, the chairman and chief executive of the technology company RealNetworks Inc., had joined the company as the chairman of its board. Glaser has also been an investor in the company, although he declined to disclose the value of his stake.

The company also said that its interim CEO, Doug Kreeger, had stepped aside and that it had begun a search for a full-time chief executive. Kreeger will remain on the company's board. In the meantime, the company is being run on a day-to-day basis by its president Jon Sinton, a longtime radio executive, and Carl Ginsberg, its executive vice president.

Air America has been signing up more stations and gaining its footing following a shaky start earlier this year. The company went through a management shakeup in May, about five weeks after going on the air, that included the departure of its previous chairman, Evan Cohen, and other executives.

I think he may possibly have a substance abuse problem or a chemical imbalance, and when sober/mentally level he can be an alright guy. He's managed to get a chuckle or two out of me in the past.

Of what value is a two-year contract with Air America, which may not be in existence two years from now? It's sort of like being named a General in East Germany in October, 1989, isn't it?

Rob Glaser, the chairman and chief executive of the technology company RealNetworks

That's why there is no Real Audio on my computer and why I click off a site if they require it.

Comcast on Demand had video of air america with Franken 11/2 day/night. In the days after the election, it was a blast to play and replay him losing his optimism. Slo mo, fast, whatever, it was great to watch reality set in.

Actually I prefer him ranting in a closed sound booth for the next two years. I hope they run out of money too. Cut the power and we've Franken just where we want him.

I was in college when he was on Saturday Night Live. He and his comedy partner Davis (can't remember his first name) were coming to do a show at our small school. Me and some guys were throwing a football around on the quad and a limo stopped and they got out and threw the ball with us for a while. We thought it was cool.

Nice memory but he is still a liberal creep and should stick to entertainment.

I never use it and I remove it from every computer I touch. If it don't play on Quicktime or WMP, it don't play at all.

This may be a prudent move. Think of all those depressed democrates who have no focus and now have felt they hit rock bottom. They have no church to speak of, no "god" but government.

The alfrankins are trying to provide a home for those lost souls who would never concieve of going to another church.

I think the claim of 2 year deal is more puff than substance. They will have to have a never ending list of investors to keep the ponzie scheme going.

It is interesting to note that Clear Channel which distributes Rush Limbaugh and carries him on many of its own stations, is putting Air America on many of its low power AM stations.

1230 AM, a thougand watt class four local station in Columubus Ohio, now carries Air America.

In some markets Clear Channel has leased stations owned by other people and put Air America on the leased station. In one of the Carolina markets they have moved Rush and other conservative talk shows to a Class C FM station and then put Air America on the AM Station that formerly was a Rush Station.

Could it be that Clear Channel believes that some day the left will return to power?. If Clear Channel has Air America running in most of the major markets where they own stations the left may leave them alone.

It goes market by market with what works and what doesn't.

With WFII 1230AM in Columbus, they have gone through numerous format changes looking for what might work and this is yet another try. Theoretically, there are more than enough listeners for that format within their signal range. Franklin county went for Kerry and it's where lots of lefties live and work. You've got Ohio State University, Capital University, Otterbein, Ohio state and Federal offices, the courts, and a higher concentration of black population that would be potential listeners.

Not a big surprise. What would be funny is if that format fails on that station.

FYI - I have a fair amount of experience in radio/tv in the central ohio market (worked are tv/radio stations) and have access to CC thought process/programming rationale. My .02.

He is so boring. Preaching to the converted.
Some Air America stations (3 or 4 out of the 40--wow!--they now have) run a woman named Stephanie Miller, daughter of Au-H20's running mate (sorry, I couldn't make the 2 sub-script!!maybe CBS can show me)...who is actually liberal. She's lively and even funny. But she is SOOOOOO wrong. I taped a few minutes of her show today for a friend in California who can't get her show. Still on the whole "let's recount" thing. Yeesh!

So, Miller at least has a pulse unlike Lying Liar.

There was a reason that Franken got a 1 year contract in the first place. Franken's show is the only one that gets measurable ratings anyway. I can't see the current business model lasting past the new year (is WLIB going to continue to carry them?), but maybe they get money from the satellite radio companies.
