Baathists Reportedly Relay Money, Support

U.S. military intelligence officials have concluded that the Iraqi insurgency is being directed to a greater degree than previously recognized from Syria, where they said former Saddam Hussein loyalists have found sanctuary and are channeling money and other support to those fighting the established government.

Based on information gathered during the recent fighting in Fallujah, Baghdad and elsewhere in the Sunni Triangle, the officials said that a handful of senior Iraqi Baathists operating in Syria are collecting money from private sources in Saudi Arabia and Europe and turning it over to the insurgency.

In some cases, evidence suggests that these Baathists are managing operations in Iraq from a distance, the officials said. A U.S. military summary of operations in Fallujah noted recently that troops discovered a global positioning signal receiver in a bomb factory in the western part of the city that "contained waypoints originating in western Syria."

Concerns about Syria's role in Iraq were also expressed in interviews The Washington Post conducted yesterday with Jordan's King Abdullah and Iraqi President Ghazi Yawar. "There are people in Syria who are bad guys, who are fugitives of the law and who are Saddam remnants who are trying to bring the vicious dictatorship of Saddam back," Yawar said. "They are not minding their business or living a private life. They are . . . disturbing or undermining our political process."...."

Gosh, if Iraq declared war on Syria, then we would be obliged to help the Iraqis in their hour of need. This help could come in the form of MOABs dropped in a target rich environment in western Syria...

The humiliation the rags are going to suffer in Damascus is going to make Fallujah look like a walk in the park.

Looks like the administration is preparing the public for our next conquest in Syria.

Still, I think he'll move pretty slowly.

Well, if you have been following this closely, you can see that just about all the diplomatic tools have been used up. The warnings now are getting close to action. We won't be there long. Just a few minutes.

"My son is in the Marine Corps serving on the Syria/Iraq border. His platoon is mortared daily from Syria. Unfortunately the Syrian government claims no knowledge of who might be responsible. This has been going on for months."

I am surprised in one way that Syria has not responded. You would think at this point they would have the exact coordinates using the new radar they have that tracks incoming mortar rounds etc., and would have sent DragonEye or larger spy planes to take videos of where the firing points are. Then told the Syrians they have a couple days to observe then clean out the rats or a gunship or apache would have to go in and to the job. That is, send the ship in when the incoming starts, be there in about five minutes or so, and zero in on who is firing the stuff.
If one of our Marines gets KIA, or WIA from north of the boarder, then clearly with the foreknowldege of what has been going on, the Syrians must be held accountable. If they cannot get the job done, then you would think the Marines would ask the State Department to demand that our boys be permitted to quickly go in and finish the shit heads off.
Then if it happens again. Syria must be held accountable as perpetuating the mortar attacks, since their army does not resolve the problem.
This shit has got to stop. Bashar is putting himself in a deep hole the longer he waits to just give in and start stopping the incoming insurgents from infiltrating in to.
He like all Arab leaders love to play games. So it is time we play some games with them. Shit just go across the boarder to where the incoming is originating and do a little bit of "GET SOME". Then see if Basher wakes the hell up.

"I'm willing to bet Bush will invade Syria in the next four years. We'll find the WMD there, then the Libs will fall head over heels trying to justify their opposition to the war. Once we are greeted as liberators in Damascus, we can start worrying about Tehran..."

Problem is by now they would have destroyed all traces of any WMD's and all trails to the stuff, realizing it is only time until we go in looking for the stuff.
We'll send in some Special OPS teams into spots Israeli Intel tells us to go only to find nothing is left. Then the Syrians and Lebaneese will say, hey what are you doing..... you can't just invade us. We have nothing here to hide.
There have been supposedly very good reliable reports from Syrians citizens etc., long ago that said lots of stuff was sent to Syria then redistributed. But at this point?
See, Americans, we are clean now please get out.

I have to believe that they've known this from the beginning but have given up on Assad taking the hint. His future hints will be offers he cannot refuse. I have a feeling France and the UN and Germany had better not decide to be Assad's lawyer and defender the way they did for Saddam. This is going to be the last straw if they do.

The Bekaa valley is a particularly nasty place (although it's in Lebanon, not Syria) - if we have to clean the place out it will be a very dirty job.

It's in Lebanon, but controled by the Syrian army and it's various terrorist surragates. It's also the ideal place to test the follow on to the MOAB, plus various fuel air explosives.

Historically, the air space over it has been a great place for a Turkey Shoot. :)

Could it be that the additional troops sent over to Iraq are not for the election, as the official story goes, but are rather for the push into Syria? I agree with your assessment--this is entering the final stage. The President won't waste his time going to Congress or the UN again.

Syria will respond, of course, perhaps using Iraq's WMD to attack Israel (possibly through Lebanon?), and Bush will have no choice but to then invade Syria.

If Syria uses WMDs on Israel, there won't be much of Syria invade. Israel will nuke 'em.

I am reading "The Virtues of War" about Alexander the Great. His geographical analysis of Syria was about the same as yours but he said the east cavalry country not tank country.

I'm sure we don't where that counter battery fire is coming from either....officially that is.
