Rocking For Christ
cbs ^ | 12-7-04

The growing clout of America's 100-million evangelical Christians is being heard loud and clear. Just turn on your radio, and you'll notice that a seismic shift in American culture is taking place.

Before, you could tune into different stations, which offered different music and different messages.

But now, as Correspondent Bob Simon reports on 60 Minutes Wednesday, Dec. 8, at 8 p.m. ET/PT,, evangelical Christian music is flowing into mainstream media -- and changing it. In fact, Christian entertainment now brings in $4 billion a year.

Rappers and rockers are making hits and making money while spreading the gospel to national audiences. Christian groups can be heard on secular radio and seen on "The Tonight Show." Earlier this year, the group Third Day even played at the Republican National Convention.

"The fact that there are Christian themes now emerging in rock and that Christians are in rock is just representative of a spiritual desire or a spiritual hunger in our culture," says Cameron Strang, publisher of Relevant Magazine, a religious publication.

Are you daft? No, they did not expose themselves. The ephod was worn OVER the top of their robes. It was not a stand alone garment. Davis was wearing an ephod alone. He shed his royal robes, wore just and ephod and danced before God. Once you understand what an ephod actually is then maybe you can comprehend what is being said to you.

Isaiah 5 attitude. How long between repetitions before it becomes vain?

Thank you for the visuals. Now, maybe someone can admit that they were wrong. I won't hold my breath. BTW, the first pic is more authentic looking as the stones seem to be in place whereas in the 2nd I didn't notice them.

The second is from a current catolog for use in some sort of praise/worship of Jesus. I'm sure they are watering down the message etc. and are simply worshiping wrongly.

Good pic. Breastplate is attached. Private parts (penis and buttocks) would not beexposed for the world to see, especially since David offered sacrice that day and addressed a great number.

Matthew Henry's Commentary:
On this occasion David laid aside his royal robes , and put on a plain linen dress. David prayed with and for the people, and as a prophet, solemnly blessed them in the name of the Lord.

You are kidding? The whole package is exposed. This first picture covers very little below the waist and what it does cover would be flapping like crazy if someone was dancing.

After seeing what he was wearing, I fully understand why some commentators say he was naked. Its like saying a man wasn't naked because he wore a scarf.

I hate! Christian "Rock", only because it's awful. Give me some old timey Bluegrass Hymns and I'll cry. Sing the fourth verse of My Country Tis of Thee in Church and I'll cry. Christmas songs..the same.

But, with the exception of one "reggae" Christian song I heard once (pretty good and I could dance to it), Christian "rock" is an insult to both Christianity and Rock and Roll...

Sorry, I don't mean to offend anyone. Christ is my savior.

Here ya go. It is an example of a lyric from DC Talk. A great band, and definitely not "watered down":

What will people think
When they hear that I'm a Jesus Freak?
What will people do
When they find that's it's true?

Separated, I cut myself clean
From a past that comes back in my darkest of dreams
Been apprehended by a spiritual force
And a grace that replaced all the me I've divorced

I saw a man with tat on his big fat belly
It wiggled around like marmalade jelly
It took me a while to catch what it said
Cause I had to match the rhythm
Of his belly with my head
'Jesus Saves' is what it raved in a typical tattoo green
He stood on a box in the middle of the city
And claimed he had a dream

(chorus)
What will people think
When they hear that I'm a Jesus freak
What will people do when they find that it's true
I don't really care if they label me a Jesus freak
There ain't no disguising the truth

Kamikaze, my death is gain
I've been marked by my Maker
A peculiar display
The high and lofty, they see me as weak
Cause I won't live and die for the power they seek

There was a man from the desert with naps in his head
The sand that he walked was also his bed
The words that he spoke made the people assume
There wasn't too much left in the upper room
With skins on his back and hair on his face
They thought he was strange by the locusts he ate
The Pharisees tripped when they heard him speak
Until the king took the head of this Jesus freak

(repeat chorus 2x)

People say I'm strange, does it make me a stranger
That my best friend was born in a manger
People say I'm strange, does it make me a stranger
That my best friend was born in a manger

(repeat chorus 2x)

What will people think
[What will people think]
What will people do
[What will people do]
I don't really care
[What else can I say]
There ain't no disguising the truth
[Jesus is the way]

The best way I've heard this argued is by the example of Go'd's commandment in building the arc. He said to make it of gopher wood which would exclude say pine or any other wood for that matter. To make melody in your heart excludes making melody with say a organ or any other instrument for that matter. Do you see my reasoning? Is it flawed?

Yes, it is flawed. If I make an ark with Gopher wood, it would not be possible for me to make it with pine. If I make a melody in my heart, I can also duplicate that melody with my voice and with instruments. It's the same melody, but expressed.

I didn't say all their stuff was "watered down". If you see my previous post, I like DC Talk. I was asked to give an example of watered down and I gave one of a song IMO was watered down.

I just don't get it.

Jesus ate with the tax collectors and had His hair washed by a prostitute.

He went to the people, yet some here want us to hide away in man made buildings.

I understand being a Holy people, salt and light. I must say that I even disagree with my fellow rockers who tattoo and pierce. I do not however curse their ministry!

There is a risk of blending or blurring the standards......still

Who do they say He is?

"dark, rebellious, evil-themed music "

Can you define what you mean by "dark, rebellious, evil-themed music"? I'm not sure I get it. Words give music meaning. Without words, music is just melody (or not;-).

I've been to Passion plays, and such, where they used instrumental music which was "dark", or maybe "ominous" during the scene of Jesus crucifixion. Is that evil?

The style of music simply compliments the words (or visuals such as the Passion play mentioned above). It's what we put with the music that determines whether or not it's edifying or evil.

A previous poster mentioned "Highway to Hell" as a music style and wondered if that could be used by God. I'd say that it's possible for God to inspire somebody to write lyrics to be sung to the music from "Highway to Hell" in such a way that bring honor and glory to God. But then, my God's pretty big. :-)

How do you feel about this song by a man of God? Not really a strong Gospel message? Maybe we should pull it?

Song of Solomon 4

1 How beautiful you are, my darling!

Oh, how beautiful!

Your eyes behind your veil are doves.

Your hair is like a flock of goats

descending from Mount Gilead.

2 Your teeth are like a flock of sheep just shorn,

coming up from the washing.

Each has its twin;

not one of them is alone.

3 Your lips are like a scarlet ribbon;

your mouth is lovely.

Your temples behind your veil

are like the halves of a pomegranate.

4 Your neck is like the tower of David,

built with elegance [a] ;

on it hang a thousand shields,

all of them shields of warriors.

5 Your two breasts are like two fawns,

like twin fawns of a gazelle

that browse among the lilies.

6 Until the day breaks

and the shadows flee,

I will go to the mountain of myrrh

and to the hill of incense.

7 All beautiful you are, my darling;

there is no flaw in you.

8 Come with me from Lebanon, my bride,

come with me from Lebanon.

Descend from the crest of Amana,

from the top of Senir, the summit of Hermon,

from the lions' dens

and the mountain haunts of the leopards.

9 You have stolen my heart, my sister, my bride;

you have stolen my heart

with one glance of your eyes,

with one jewel of your necklace.

10 How delightful is your love, my sister, my bride!

How much more pleasing is your love than wine,

and the fragrance of your perfume than any spice!

11 Your lips drop sweetness as the honeycomb, my bride;

milk and honey are under your tongue.

The fragrance of your garments is like that of Lebanon.

12 You are a garden locked up, my sister, my bride;

you are a spring enclosed, a sealed fountain.

13 Your plants are an orchard of pomegranates

with choice fruits,

with henna and nard,

14 nard and saffron,

calamus and cinnamon,

with every kind of incense tree,

with myrrh and aloes

and all the finest spices.

15 You are [b] a garden fountain,

a well of flowing water

streaming down from Lebanon.
Beloved
16 Awake, north wind,

and come, south wind!

Blow on my garden,

that its fragrance may spread abroad.

Let my lover come into his garden

and taste its choice fruits.
