The growing clout of America's 100-million evangelical Christians is being heard loud and clear. Just turn on your radio, and you'll notice that a seismic shift in American culture is taking place.
Before, you could tune into different stations, which offered different music and different messages.
But now, as Correspondent Bob Simon reports on 60 Minutes Wednesday, Dec. 8, at 8 p.m. ET/PT,, evangelical Christian music is flowing into mainstream media -- and changing it. In fact, Christian entertainment now brings in $4 billion a year.
Rappers and rockers are making hits and making money while spreading the gospel to national audiences. Christian groups can be heard on secular radio and seen on "The Tonight Show." Earlier this year, the group Third Day even played at the Republican National Convention.
"The fact that there are Christian themes now emerging in rock and that Christians are in rock is just representative of a spiritual desire or a spiritual hunger in our culture," says Cameron Strang, publisher of Relevant Magazine, a religious publication.

No.
And just who is wishy washy? No one here is talking about being double minded. You know, the Pharisees thought they had it all figured out. So do the modern day Pharisees who are so tied up in their doctrines, legalism and so forth. Nothing had changed among those who follow their traditions. It is still "my way or hell". Where the spirit of the Lord is there is liberty. Because His Spirit dwells within me, I am FREE from the bondages of legalism and tradition. I can move as He gives me unction. If I worship Him with traditional songs, praise music, or Christian rock He will be pleased because He is the focus and He receives the honor glory and praise. If I clap my hands because I enjoy the talents that He has given another I am honoring Him, not man. It's all about about Him. Not you, not me, not the musician or anything else. It is all about Jesus.

The founder is ex military and I believe that his father is still in the Middle East. Frontline has a dual message of sorts. Something for the spiritual battle as well as the physical battle. Be sure to read about them. You will enjoy it I am sure.
You miss the point of the story. Their hearts were in the wrong place. They were acting with arrogance. They were puting themselves in the place of God.
Jubal's Kinnor
The lyre, from the Hebrew word pronounced kin-nor, was a stringed musical instrument known from very ancient times - it was invented by Jubal (from which the word jubilation is derived) in the seventh generation after creation. It was widely used by the Hebrew people for worship and pleasure. Although somewhat similar, and variously translated as such, the harp and lyre were technically different instruments. The harp was larger, with a resonant body, and according to the Jewish historian Josephus, the lyre had ten strings which were picked with a plectrum, while the harp had twelve strings which were played with fingers alone. A lyre is shown on an ancient coin in the illustration below.
The Lyre In Bible History
The Lyre was known from the most ancient times:
"Adah bore Jabal; he was the father of those who dwell in tents and have cattle. His brother's name was Jubal; he was the father of all those who play the lyre and pipe." (Genesis 4:20-21 RSV)
"And Laban said to Jacob, "What have you done, that you have cheated me, and carried away my daughters like captives of the sword? Why did you flee secretly, and cheat me, and did not tell me, so that I might have sent you away with mirth and songs, with tambourine and lyre?" (Genesis 31:26-27 RSV) (see Jacob and Laban)
"And Saul sent to Jesse, saying, "Let David remain in my service, for he has found favor in my sight." And whenever the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, David took the lyre and played it with his hand; so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him." (1 Samuel 16:22-23 RSV)
"And the king made of the almug wood supports for the house of The Lord, and for the king's house, lyres also and harps for the singers; no such almug wood has come or been seen, to this day." (1 Kings 10:12 RSV) (see Solomon, Layout Of Solomon's Temple and Temples)
"And he stationed the Levites in the house of The Lord with cymbals, harps, and lyres, according to the commandment of David and of Gad the king's seer and of Nathan the prophet; for the commandment was from The Lord through His prophets." (2 Chronicles 29:25 RSV)
"Praise The Lord with the lyre, make melody to Him with the harp of ten strings!" (Psalm 33:2 RSV)
Well, we know that the harp is a sinful instrument.../sarcasm
I saw Third Day Saturday in Belton too. Good music, great message.
Locally, (central TX) Doxadeo is another awsome rock/pop/alternative band. I'm predjudice though, their also our Sunday morning worship team.
THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PRAISE SONGS AND HYMNS . . .
Best FR post I've ever read. Flat out. Thank you!
their = they're.
?
God authored music. Satan made a cheap counterfeit.
We're taking it back.
First of all, my friend, you don't know me at all. You don't know what I THINK and I certainly don't THINK the above. I won't presume to know what you think. I find it unfortunate when a difference in doctrine or worship styles results in judgements, name-calling and assumptions.
All the while you fail to understand that being lukewarm, that failing to give simple, unashamed declarations of the Gospel, is just as much a sin as if we did film porn in church to try to bring in the lost!
That is a ridiculous statement. I am neither lukewarm nor fail to understand the importance of "unashamed declarations of the Gospel". What I find more troubling than the disaggreement in music is the mean-spirited jabs and name-calling that accompany some of those that would disagree. Is this not sinful? Please have a thoughtful look inside at how you communicate with people that you disagree with. I fail to see Christ in THAT.
In my experience, churches w/ contemporary Christian music worship are more spontaneous, more free and more open to the presence of God than churches where formula (two hymns, offering, another hymn, canned 40 minute sermon) is the order.
Oh I was just thinking lord should be Lord.
Oh.
I play on my church's praise team. Former bar circuit player. Got back in chuch and realized who the Author of music really is, and work for Him now.
A friend of mine from another chuch observed that w/ the traditional hymn book approach, the congregation is not worshipping, but hiding behind the hymnals.
BTW, our old-timers enjoy our stuff.
Very few people in our services are in their seats during praise and worship; most are down front at the altar.
Tell me this is not better.
"Praise choruses violate the Scriptural injunction against mantras. They also have no depth whatsoever."
So true. It's that "vain repetitions" passage in the Bible.
Ok, so you folks better not sing the Hallelujah Chorus or Holy Holy Holy. After all, that's vain reps. Dear God the pharisaical manner in which some of you speak is appalling. No wonder the church is where it is at spiritually.
