Hillary Bags Assignment on Committee on Aging

In another move that helps her set the stage for a 2008 presidential run, U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton has snagged a slot on the Senate Special Committee on Aging, which deals with the politically potent issues of Social Security and Medicare.

After an ally, incoming Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, announced the appointment yesterday, Clinton told New York's WINS Radio that as Baby Boomers began to reach retirement, the work of the committee would become increasingly important.

Top on the committee's agenda next year will be Social Security reform, which could turn into a battle royale as Democrats and Republicans wrestle with how to save the system.

Clinton's high-profile role on the Aging Committee is certain to help her in battleground states four years from now, states such as Florida, Pennsylvania and Arizona, which have high senior populations.

The former first lady already serves on the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, the Environment and Public Works Committee, and the Armed Services Committee.

Joking aside, I agree with other posters that we need to watch out here.

She is going to be all over tv, talking about "protecting" Social Security. If the RINOs in our party are stupid enough to propose a payroll tax increase to finance SS reform (as Lindsey Graham has already done), she will be all over America fighting against that tax increase.

This is just another opportunity for her to run to the right of the GOP for 2008. She will be fighting the payroll tax increase, just as she will be fighting illegal immigration.

I have been shocked by the volume of news in the media and postings on here from conservative Republicans who are supporting tax increases as part of a SS reform package.

I suspect she'll win Fla. The question is whether the Republicans can take a few of Kerry's Blue States to make up the electoral votes. Wisc., MI, and MN are the most likely candidates, but I don't see any GOP strategy forming to get them. We need a midwesterner on the ticket. How about Norm Coleman at #2? Will that be enough? Hillary could also easily choose a midwesterner to be number 2, and neutralize it.

And speaking of Hilliary, I keep waiting for someone to question her on Oil For Food. There's some fertile ground there for anyone willing to do some spadework.

Did you see this...

Yes, and I heard Mr. Newt on Hannity while I was running errands- he thinks she's a formidable candidate, and whatever anyone else says about Newt, he's a sharp political operator. I take what he says seriously.
