Inside Politics: Bond vs. Mfume

"Don't believe the well-scripted press conference where former president and chief executive officer of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People Kweisi Mfume announced his resignation," Armstrong Williams writes in Human Events Online (www.humaneventsonline.com). "Mfume did not resign from the nation's oldest and most prestigious civil rights organization. He was kicked out, following a long-simmering feud with NAACP Chairman Julian Bond.

"The two began feuding after Mfume nominated National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice for his 2003 NAACP Image Award. Furious that Mfume was reaching out to the Bush administration, Bond responded by nominating 'Boondocks' cartoonist Aaron McGruder for his Image Award. McGruder had ridiculed Rice in his comic strip and later called her a 'murderer' for her role in the war in Iraq.

"The rift grew as Mfume continued to reach out to the Republican Party. Mfume realized that by reflexively voting Democrat in every election, the black voting populace has given away most of their political bartering power."

It was Mr. Bond who in 2003 "referred to the Republican Party as 'a crazed swarm of right-wing locusts' and called the GOP "the white people's party," Mr. Williams notes.

After last month's election, he adds: "Mfume suggested sending a letter to President Bush, mapping out ways that they could work together to help the community. Bond rejected the idea. Mfume sent the letter anyway. To Bond, this was unforgivable. A few weeks later, Bond had Mfume voted out. The message was clear: There is no room within the NAACP for intellectual diversity. Just loyal servitude to the Democratic Party."

Kweisi Mfume, whose Christian name is Frizzell Grey, took a respected organization and made it be the Black mouth-piece of the radical left section of the Democrat Party.

I would love to see the NAACP pull back from the abyss and become a respected organization again.

But it will never happen. To do so would mean becoming "uppity" with their Democrat masters. The NAACP will always put the Democrat Party above the issues of Black America.

They will never talk about how Blacks make up 12% of the US population and account for nearly 40% of all abortion. To do so would go against the "abortion at anytime, anyplace as long as you feel like it" policies of the Democrat Party.

They will never talk about improving inner schools with school choice, charter schools, firing of bad teachers, school accountability and having school monies actually go into improving schools. To do so would go against the "support the unions no matter what and support higher union wages at all costs" policies of the Democrat Party.

They will never talk about supporting traditional marriage and values because that would go against the "gays get anything they want because they give the big bucks" polices if the Democrat Party.

The NAACP used to be a strong counterweight to the radical and racist organizations of the Black Panthers, the Black Muslims, and similar Black extremist groups.

Now they are indistinguishable.

And as Hispanics and Asians continue to grow at faster rates than Black America, the NAACP will become just as irrelevant.

Mfume was a Congresscritter from Maryland for a couple of terms - pretty much a cookie-cutter liberal, followed the Black Caucus line. However, he is far from stupid. After he managed to straighten out the NAA(L)CP's finances, he tried to come up with a way to get both major political parties to pander to them. Were it not for Julian Bond's rabid hatred of Republicans and conservatives (and I think all white people as well) Kweisi may well have pulled it off. He wanted to publicly make polite noises at Republicans and privately threaten Democrats that their lock on the black vote was in danger.

For all these reasons and more the African-American vote is becoming more irrelevant.

As the Step-n-Fetchits of the Democratic party, they have virtually no influence on the Republican administrations who have proved time and again they can win without the black vote.

And the Democrats also treat them with disdain (except for mouthing pious platitudes)leaving them out of the inner counsels of the party and without any rewards for their loyalty.

The 'leaders' like Bonds, Jackson, and Sharpton have sold them out for a mess of pottage.
