Civil rights panel gets new chief

Mary Frances Berry, the outspoken chairman of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, was replaced yesterday by President Bush as her term expired, after 24 years on the panel.
Gerald Reynolds, former assistant secretary in the Department of Education's civil rights office, was appointed chairman of the eight-member panel. Ashley Taylor, former deputy attorney general of Virginia, also was appointed to the commission, to replace panel Vice Chairman Cruz Reynoso.
Mr. Reynolds was appointed chairman, and Commissioner Abigail Thernstrom, a Republican appointee but political independent, was appointed vice chairman.

The moves, effective immediately, confirmed information first reported yesterday in The Washington Times.
In another immediate move, Kenneth Marcus, who succeeded Mr. Reynolds at the Department of Education, was named the commission's staff director, replacing Les Jin, who was appointed by President Clinton in 2000.

we will still have to change the locks, because there are many people here who are loyal to her who would allow her in."

I don't get this.

All DC federal buildings have armed guards at the entrance. Instruct the guards that Berry is to be denied admittance to the building.

"The White House has clipped her wings," said a commission staffer who spoke on the condition of anonymity. "She has been stripped of her ability to travel and will be asked to turn over her official badge. She will be asked for her keys to the building, although we will still have to change the locks, because there are many people here who are loyal to her who would allow her in."

And I wanted to go up there to watch them drag her out of the building! That's what I get for using my time trying to get ready for Christmas instead of paying attention to the news!!!

I Love to see a well-deserved ZOT being applied.

Yep, Julian Bond will probably want to hire her.

She's going to be Mfume's successor, if I had to make a bet.

I think it is a wonderful message they've sent that she is completely locked out. Literally.

Yes indeedy. I sure hope that she never gets back into the building. Ever. And that those loyal to her are fired, though I'm probably dreaming, here.

Absolutely.
Change the locks, then fumigate.

You stole my fantasy. Listening to Brit Hume last night, apparently Berry feels she has 30+ days remaining to fulfill her term and plans to stay until the last hour. Once she realizes her pay has terminated, I doubt she'll continue this charade.

Bump for the question: What can be done with all the Berry sympathizers she's installed over the years, in that building? Can they be fired?

I could go with "shot on sight" but I suppose that is a bit harsh.

Oh, I think she'll try to stay. She has instructions to give to her minions, she has records to remove, hide, and destroy, she has computers to steal, she has money to squirrel away...

I have no doubt she'll be dragged kicking and screaming out of the building. And I would love to see it.
