Mary Frances Berry, the outspoken chairman of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, was replaced yesterday by President Bush as her term expired, after 24 years on the panel.
Gerald Reynolds, former assistant secretary in the Department of Education's civil rights office, was appointed chairman of the eight-member panel. Ashley Taylor, former deputy attorney general of Virginia, also was appointed to the commission, to replace panel Vice Chairman Cruz Reynoso.
Mr. Reynolds was appointed chairman, and Commissioner Abigail Thernstrom, a Republican appointee but political independent, was appointed vice chairman. The moves, effective immediately, confirmed information first reported yesterday in The Washington Times.
In another immediate move, Kenneth Marcus, who succeeded Mr. Reynolds at the Department of Education, was named the commission's staff director, replacing Les Jin, who was appointed by President Clinton in 2000.

The Wash Times left out the part where they had to drag Ms Berry screaming and thrashing, out of the office. ;-D
Good, the mouthy, self-entitled racist can go home and live without a power trip. Ho got slapped down.
Any one doubt she will sue?
"Outspoken" = bitch.
What's next for the old bat--off to the UN to stir up more hate and discontent on a global scale? Can't think of a better setting for one of life's big losers.
Good riddance to bad rubbish..I'd love to hear the story of her kicking and screaming on the way out. Can you believe they are going to have to change the locks?? It's like getting rid of a crack head tenant.
As implied, it was just a matter of not letting her in the building in the morning. It was equally impotant to remove her henchman Les Jin. I don't envy Mr. Reynolds and Ms. Thernstrom. They have one hell of an Augean mess to shovel out. I just hope they are taking care to prevent any document shredding and hard drive wiping. Some indictments had better be coming down.
Ding Dong the witch is dead!!!!
WOOOHOOOOO!!!!
Remember how we watched her try to keep the republican appointe off the panel-IIRC the whole arguement was over whether some other (liberal) member was serving a complete 4 yr term or just completing the final year of the person they replaced who already served 3 years. It was wild and showed this woman for what she was.
Anyone got the links from back then? There were a ton of threads on it.
She's G O N E!
.....The commission has not had an independent financial audit since she became chairman, and is now the subject of an investigation by the House Judiciary subcommittee on the Constitution"
Talk about a golden retirement plan, she's probably going to get free housing, utilities, food and medical care for twenty years. Maybe she can advocate for better food for federal inmates.
"For Ms. Berry, it is a relatively calm end to a long, tumultuous tenure. She told the Los Angeles Times Sunday that she would go quietly, despite her belief that her term ends next month.
Ms. Berry could not be reached for comment yesterday.
"The White House has clipped her wings," said a commission staffer who spoke on the condition of anonymity. "She has been stripped of her ability to travel and will be asked to turn over her official badge. She will be asked for her keys to the building, although we will still have to change the locks, because there are many people here who are loyal to her who would allow her in."
An investigation could possibly lead to criminal charges.
She'd be perfect to head the NAACP.
Twenty years in Martha Stewart's current mansion.
about bloody time! can't believe she hasn't barricaded herself in the building and chained herself to her desk...
Hehehe... good riddance - I'm sure MF Berry is coming down about now with a major case of POST - Post-Office Shock Trauma. Couldn't have happened to a more deserving ex-chairman.
bump!
Republicans now have an effective majority on the Commission. We've wised up to the trick of Democrats nominating Democrats as nominal independents so we did the same. Two of our "independents" are actually conservatives. Lock, set and match.
