Bush was 're-elected by Porsche drivers'

By David Rennie in Washington
(Filed: 07/12/2004)

The backroom wizards who won the American presidential election for George W Bush have disclosed how they tracked down every last Republican, even in traditionally unfriendly districts.

Using market research more normally reserved for the launch of a new soap powder or soft drink, they drew up a database indicating the likely political persuasion of every consumer, based on car brands, hobbies and favourite television programmes.

Research showed that the most Republican car was Porsche Having found America's water-skiing, golf-loving Porsche drivers, they then persuaded them to vote. Bush strategists told the New York Times that they targeted advertising minutely, sending advertising dollars to small, sometimes, tiny niche broadcasters and media outlets - from religious and country music radio outlets, to video screens hanging in a chain of gymnasiums.

Their research told them that the most Republican car marques were Porsche, followed by Jaguar, Land Rover, and General Motors. Other luxury car-makers that scored well among conservatives were Audi, Lexus and Jeep.

Volvo, Subaru and Volkswagen owners showed a strong Democratic bias. In general, Middle Americans favoured US-built vehicles. Sports were also a key indicator. Republicans loved golf, fishing, snowmobiling, hunting, power-boating and riding horses.

Out of 34 recreational activities studied, only three were solid Democratic indicators: dancing, casino gambling and antique-shopping.

At any given time, Democrats were 15 per cent more likely to be watching television than Republicans, with top Democratic programmes being game shows and celebrity court cases.

Once you've lived with Audi interiors, it's hard to go back to most other marques. And German cars are designed to go 120+mph on the Autobahn, and even at a mere 80, they just feel different. And it's a really good "different".

GM may be getting a clue, however. GM spent considerable suspension development time for the CTS-V at the Nurburgring. I'll look at one closely, on the next go-around. With the current exchange rates, I expect it to be a really competitive choice.

Strange. Of all the SUV's, the only ones I saw a TON of Kerry stickers on was the "Jeep Liberty".

I figured F-150 would be number one for Bush. Although Explorers had their share of Bush stickers.

I have a Honda Insight, and I've been looking for an "Excuse me, but you obviously mistaken me for a Liberal" bumper sticker for a while now. I also like "Think Locally, Act Globally".

Sounds right to me. A Porsche passed my SUV, we gave the Volvo to the stepdaughter, and just after putting the ski boat in storage I voted for Bush.

Well, let's see.

I've had to transfer my "Bush/Cheney" stickers several times now.

I took over my son's Passport (SUV), as my Dodge Spirit died a slow and painful death.

So then my son started driving his old Jeep, then it had problems, so then he had to share his girlfriend's car. Then IT started to backfire, so he took the Passport back, and I started driving my fiance's Lincoln. Then, the Jeep got fixed, so I took back the Passport, and now my son is back to driving his Jeep.

I guess you could call us a dysfunctional vehicular family. Analyze THAT you idiots!

Schmuck. A porsche? My 1990 accura integra (125 thousand miles) has been sitting in my driveway since the srping. Because I cannot afford the 900 dollars it would cost to fix it.

I wonder how Jerry Seinfeld voted.

Ok, this is gonna sound real bad, but...

In Grad school a roommate of mine always made it a point to have a young "welfare mom" handy. He usually was seeing several girls at a time, but anyhow, that's besides the point.

He explained it to me that "welfare moms" have the nicest stuff and always have food.
When he got tired of Top Ramen, he'd call up an old flame, and go visit, and eat like Caesar.

One night he came back with a box of ice cream.
"Dude, these are Drumsticks!, Real Authentic Drumsticks, not the Ghetto-knock off "Rocky Top Cones" we buy!"

another great line
"Dude, the Welfare Queen has a new Big Screen! BIG HONKIN' SCREEN DUDE! ESPN Picture in Picture, all that.
I'm wanna talk her into getting NFL Season Ticket, but then I think she'll want me to take her out in public"

Not a classy guy, but funny, and proves your point as well.

I wonder how Jerry Seinfeld voted.

I don't want to know. To my knowledge, Jerry has never used his celebrity to speak out politically. Hopefully, he never does, as I LOVED the show.....and still watch the re-runs religiously.

Well I'm a conservative Republican who drives a 1992 Ford Taurus I bought six years ago. It looks good and drives beautifully. I do have a very good mechanic, and I don't have to take it too often. Paid $1,900 cash for it.
