President Bush will appoint two new members to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights this week, possibly as early as today, and replace panel Chairman Mary Frances Berry.
Several sources close to the commission told The Washington Times yesterday that the new panel members will be Ashley Taylor, a former Virginia deputy attorney general, and Gerald Reynolds, the former assistant secretary in the Department of Education's civil rights office.
The new members will replace Ms. Berry and Vice Chairman Cruz Reynoso on the eight-member panel.
The White House has insisted over the past two weeks that those terms expired last night at midnight, and that the new commissioners would be appointed promptly. Ms. Berry and Mr. Reynoso have said that their terms end Jan. 21.
One sitting commission member, who asked to remain anonymous, said the appointments could be announced today.
"We are hoping these appointments will come Monday," the panel member said. "The commissioners got the word late last week that these will be the appointments, and the appointees are the two people that several other commissioners wanted to see on the commission."
The two appointees do not require Senate confirmation.
Another commission member said that Mr. Reynolds will be the new chairman of the commission, while Abigail Thernstrom, a Republican appointee who is a registered independent, will be vice chairman. Both those posts require the approval of the sitting commissioners.

Feel sorry for the Federal Marshall who gets the call to throw her out on her keister.
As I said on the other thread, the guards at the front entrance (all federal buildings in DC now have armed guards) should be instructed to deny her admittance to the building.
If she protests, call the Capitol Police and have her arrested for trespassing.
Feel sorry? I volunteer!
Simply cancel her building pass. When she goes to swipe the card, nothing will happen and the door won't open. Problem solved.
I volunteer to do that job.
it'll be great to see that grace jones wannabe out looking for a job.
You just have to explain that comment.....(g)
Thoroughly nasty woman.
The only presidents that she rails at are those with an (R) beside their name.
Good riddance to her.
Could the President fire these people? Just curious. I understand there are political reasons why he would not want to, but could he?
In a word, yes, since she is a political appointee.
But she sued the last time an attempt was made to get rid of her and won.
One would think that a person with morals and ethics would submit a resignation, and allow the president to decide on whether or not to accept it, but then, I suspect she has neither.
What grounds did she sue on, and win? Could the Secretary of State sue to keep her job? That seems strange.
I'll believe that when she's got her Hush Puppies on and is hittin' her ass on down the road. I wouldn't believe a single word that this hateful, racist wench ever says.
I don't recall the particular circumstances.
I do recall reading that W was just too much of a nice guy to fight the situation.
Something about a re-appointment by Billy BlowJob Clintoon just prior to his departure, out of spite, to allow her to continue on through a Republican administration.
Her actual term ending was in question, putting the re-appointment in a grey area and there was a ruling by an appeals court that effectively allowed her to stay for another four years.
W has kept her pretty much under control for the four years, pointedly ignoring her on more than one occasion, according to some insiders.
I also recall she was pretty miffed about not getting an invitation to the Inaugural Ball, too and was excluded from some other minor functions that one would expect a person of her position to be included at.
All in all, she is nothing but a minor functionary, holding a position in a bureaucratic do-nothing "commission", created by Reagan, if memory serves, for no other reason than to shut a few select big mouths up.
Currently, her management (or mismanagement) of the 9-million dollar annual budget of the commission is being looked at.
Nasty woman probably stole it all.
Isn't she the one who rides in a limo to/from work every day, yet lives a couple of blocks from work?
Hah!
Wouldn't put it past her, but I don't think she has access to a limo in her relatively minor position.
Unless of course, that's where a portion of the 9-million dollar budget goes to.
I think you're thinking of Sheila Jackson-Lee.
Another horrid, nasty woman.
