Frist calls for review of abstinence-only programs (a cave-in to nosehair Waxman?)

Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist is calling for a review of federally funded sexual abstinence programs.

The Tennessee Republican told A-B-C's "This Week" program that federal officials should look into allegations that the programs give students false and misleading medical information.

California Democratic Congressman Henry Waxman says the programs give out false information about condoms and the effects of abortion. He also accuses the programs of blurring science and religion and getting fundamental scientific facts wrong.

Frist, who's a doctor, didn't directly address the issues raised. But he says the programs should be reviewed.

from LifeNews: "Of course they should be reviewed,'' Frist said. "That's in part our responsibility to make sure that all of these programs are reviewed.''

"Whether it's abstinence or whether it's a condom or whether it is better education on the infectivity of how washing hands in terms of the flu, all of these are public health challenges that we need in terms of better education," Frist said on the ABC television show.

Frist also said he backs President Bush's pro-abstinence approach to sexual education.

In an October speech to the United Nations General Assembly, U.S. Ambassador Sichan Siv encouraged member nations to promote abstinence to combat the growing threat of the AIDS virus.

"The promotion of behavior change -- encouraging abstinence and fidelity -- is integral to our fight against HIV/AIDS," Siv said.

California Congressman Henry Waxman, a Democrat, released the report Wednesday contending that the abstinence education plans funded by the Bush administration teach "false and misleading information."

However, Kimberly Martinez, executive director of the Abstinence Clearinghouse, says the medical information used by abstinence only education programs, "are medically referenced back to peer-reviewed journals, and other reputable sources, such as the CDC or NIH."

Martinez also questioned a statement early in the Waxman report claiming a "scarcity" of programs that teach contraception and sex to children and teens.

"This type of contraceptive sex education has been in schools for more than 30 years," clarified Martinez. "In fact in 2002, the Kaiser Family Foundation published that 90% of all American high school students receive sex education before graduation."

So what if they look at it. As long as they don't go with that liberal "abstinence Plus" crap, where oral sex, masturbation and homosexuality are considered "abstinence," then whatever. Look at it and pat yourselves on the back for having such a fine program. Better yet, end all sex-ed in the schools. Leave it to the parents and the churches -- places where moral teaching is not banned.

I don't mean to sound lewd, but I feel the best abstinence program is when students are shown pictures of genitalia infected with herpes and described to in detail of the symptoms. It's much more effective than this softcore Planned parenthood fluff.

I don't see a problem with Frist checking into this. If they are giving out false information, that needs to be corrected. However, if they are giving out correct information that bothers liberals, tough!

This crap is a distortion of what Frist said on This Week, this morning. And it looks like a lot of folks on this thread have fallen for it.

Sad.

I don't think it is lewd. It would certainly be as frightening if not more than the dental hygiene films they show.

Cankers are not pretty. *shudder*

Makes sense to me. They showed us car wrecks during drivers ed.

But convincing teens not to have sex would cut into the abortions industry's profit and we can't have that.

Why is it "ONE SIZE FITS ALL?" Schools have various classes offered to students in EVERY subject except sex education? How about different classes for different preferences?

This is exactly the right thing to do. Be sure they are actually teaching what they are supposed to. Fire anyone who is incompetent.

Of course this will never satisfy the libs. They consider abstinence education itself to be a flaw.

They did that in our 'small town' Kansas Jr. High. Problem was, they didn't tell the parents about it in advance.

I thought it would work, too, but by high school, the teens don't care about STD's.
