I like the musical version from the early 70s. I think it is called "Scrooge."

lol!! Am I going crazy or am I the only one who ever saw that movie when Scrooge goes to hell? I first saw this movie when I was a kid when it first came out in the `70`s, and I swear there was a part at the end where he is standing over his grave and the grave opens up and he falls in and he falls down to hell, and it`s all ice and cold and then he wakes up. That is the ONLY time I ever saw that in this movie, when I saw it in the movie theater. Every single time it`s on TV now they cut it and it drives me crazy!! I`m like WHY do they keep doing cutting it? And the only explanation I can come up with is the editors must have thought that Scrooge listening and having to sing those songs had been through enough hell, so it isn`t necessary to go there again. I mean really, how many freggin` times in that movie does they make him sing "I like life"? It goes on forever. I remember even saying out loud once "Enough already with this stupid song! get back to the movie!"

It's not your age. This version is, without a doubt, the best "Christmas Carol" and one of the best movies ever made! Your are spot-on concerning Sims' transformation throughout the movie but most especially on Christmas morning. His conversation with the little boy in the street is priceless!

"The English version with Alstair Sim has always been my favorite"

---I agree. The Sims version is the best. The George C Scott version is a very close second

Yes, that's the first one I saw, too (although I have seen others). That exchange with the solicitors is hilarious.

Duck Tales was also one of my favorite cartoons growing up - the Duck Tales movie that was in theaters was also good.

You are remembering right.

Scrooge goes to Hell, does NOt pass "Go", does not collect 200 dollars.

Bonus trivia:

What popular, now-extinct ride at Walt Disney World featured a character dying and going to Hell?

( Honest)

The English "Scrooge" from back in the 30's with Sir Seymour Hicks (the orig. 78 min. version).
Also, the short silent version by Edison is quite interesting, too.

Merry CHRISTmas!!

Alistair Sim. An absolutely perfect movie.

YES!

On "Mr. Toad's Wild Ride", you ( and Mr Toad) careen wildly around in the dark, and eventually get hit by an oncoming train and go straight to Hell, complete with devils.

I wish they'd bring that ride back...

Turner Classic Movie channel still shows that version (Reginald Owen) and I like it better than most.

My cable company doesn't have TCM, and I canceled it two months ago, anyway. Maybe I can do a search at the library and see if a copy is available thru the inter-library search.

Try http://www.whirlindisc.com/ They have some real oddball stuff

Thanks...I did look. Some interesting stuff there! But the record I'm talking about wasn't 50s music at all - just was recorded in the 50s, I believe.

*sigh* The search goes on. I would so love for that one to be re-released on CD!

The English version with Alstair Sim has always been my favorite

So far above the rest, it is almost as if the others aren't performing the same material.

1) A Christmas Carol (1951) - Alastair Sim
2) Scrooge - (1970) - Albert Finney (musical)
3) Scrooged - (1988) - Bill Murray
4) Mister Magoo's Christmas Carol (1962) - Jim Backus (musical)

The Alastair Sim one is the first one I rememeber, though probably not the first one I ever saw. The Albert Finney one just captures how I feel about the whole story, and the song "Thank You Very Much," originally sung by Scrooges creditors on his death (ghost of Christmas yet to come) just has such a lovely Addams Family ring to it.....

The Bill Murray version does a great job of updating it to the late 80s, but I don't think it will hold up over time (it's to topical). The Mister MaGoo version is just, well, perfect.

1. Alistair Sim
2. George C. Scott (a close second)

These are the most memorable because the productions were
very faithful to Dickens; the others to me were ho-hum although the Albert Funney musical did have its moments.

ARE YOU KIDDING?? That was the one?? YES! I KNEW it!! ha ha!! LOL!! My brother said he was never scared by that one but I always swore that was the scariest ride in Disney World! lol!! That is so funny! I`m 42 now and here`s another weird story you`re never going to believe...When I was about 7 or 8 my family took a cross country trip ala National Lampoons Vaction cross country in a station wagon. To this day my mother insists Chevy Chase got the idea from us becuase we even drove in the same type of station wagon and even did the same things that were in that movie. We lived in New York and we drove all the way to California believe it or not, and while we were there we visited Disneyland. We stayed in this tiny motel near there and one night we were on "main street" in Disneyland and it was late and no one was really around and it was getting boring, until this magician came up to us named Steve. To this day I remember it clear as a bell. He had 3 metal rings and he linked them together and then unlinked them and he hung out with us all night for a few hours showing us all these tricks, and to this day I KNOW it was Steve Martin the comedian. I looked up his bio once and it even said he worked in Disneyland, but my family can`t remember it! WHY??? But I KNOW it was him! If you ever sen his wide grin, I knew it was him the first time I saw him when he got famous in the `70`s. This is my life...I know I remember all this stuff but nobody else does and they make me feel like I`m crazy! lol!!

I love this version. I have the DVD. Scrooge goes to hell. I love the part where Marley says "You're the only person in hell who will be chilly."

Of course, I actually LIKE musicals....
