Sep 21, 1883: Karl Marx's theories on Socialism were expounded at length yesterday before the Senate Committee on Labor and Education by Dr. Adolph Douai of the Volks-Zeitung.
Mr. Erastus D. Goodwin, a farmer from Falls Village, Conn. appeared as an advocate of "free trade", or at least a change in the tariff which would permit the importation of raw materials free of duty. Such a change would, in his opinion, be of great benefit to both the agricultural and industrial laborer.
At today's hearing, Mr. F.B. Thurber will be heard in advocacy of anti-monopoly principles.
And what was Mr. Sarcasm's point, praytell? Sounded like he was trying to caricature a position on immigration which had nothing to do with what I posted and was not the subject of the thread, in an attempt to racebait me. I don't see anything "poignant" about that. And if you'll check his prior posts they all take that tone--he doesn't appear to be capable of saying anything without sarcasm.
LOL! My mom's side of the family is generally referred to as "the krauts," my dad's as "the WOPs."
But we're like you--Americans.
bttt
Hey Fedora, are you a believer in free trade?
Or is this more of an immigration thread?
Skimmed your history lessons.
"Don't you hate how those damn ______ immigrants won't assimilate--they even refuse to learn English! Instead, there are _______ shops, and _______ newspapers--you walk on the streets of the Upper East Side nowadays, and it's like being back in ________! On top of that, they're importing foreign ideas of Socialism onto our soil AND taking jobs from Americans. It's time to take control of immigration."
In truth, I haven't looked at all his past postings, but I think the import of this stands on its own, anyway.
Hi, Sam--nice to see you. I was indeed commenting on the historical significance of the post. I didn't mention anything about free trade or immigration. The immigration tangent was started by a troll who apparently saw a discussion of 19th-century Texas Marxism as an opportunity to use a broad brush to paint all conservative opponents of immigration as racist/xenophobic or something to that effect--how he got from my post to this stereotype, you'd have to ask the troll. As for free trade, generally speaking I believe in free trade, but I have no idea what was meant by the term in the context of Erastus Goodwin's testimony--I'm guessing something related to the mid-century debate over Corn Laws-type legislation in relation to the price of grain and farmers' earnings but I'm not sure because that's not my area of expertise--so not being sure what Goodwin meant by the term in context, I cannot comment on his specific advocacy of "free trade" without further information.
And this had what to do with what I posted that he was replying to? You say you hadn't read edg's past postings--did you bother reading what he was replying to before deciding to leap to the defense of a non sequitir attack on me?
Have you checked your meds lately?
"Edge" made a clever, and funny, reference to the implication that previous immigrant groups may not have seemed to be integrating, but that they assimilated all the same, and that perhaps this might happen again.
It may have been off topic, but it appeared that your topic included concern for what was good for America, including social systems, and immigration problems.
You are so very serious, and apparently overly sensitive. I think you should cut the new guy some slack. We were all new once.
Yeah, I tend to get sensitive when I get attacked by people I thought were my friends. So your policy is to cut trolls slack, but not your fellow FReepers, huh? Okay, NicknamedBackstabber.
Let's git him then.
RKBA must stick together. I tend to agree with NnB on this. Edge is sarcastic but has a point with the only difference being that earlier immigrant groups were here legally.
Let's all vote!
My sixty pesos says, Check Fire all around. Bigger trolls to hunt out there....
*I* am vile, poisonous and depressed, so I KNOW my judgement is off and I am less tolerant than usual.
I hope the whole thing can be sorted out, because i really like hanging out with you guys.
Darks, your getting this to be The Voice of Sanity. ( scary, but true! )
Me too.
We'll all still be together. I just want to try to help NnB and Fedora either reach common ground or drop the subject.
What subject?
Exactly!
