Something far more insidious than overpriced pumps may lurk in local shoe stores: foot fetishists longing to lay their hands on a sexy pair of feet.
They suffer from a sexual paraphilia called partialism, and focus their lustful thoughts on feet, forensic psychologist Duane Dobbert told students, lawyers and police during a seminar Friday at Florida Gulf Coast University.
"They put your foot in their crotch," said Dobbert, a criminal forensic studies associate professor at the university and author, adding there's no reason for any customer's body parts to be that close to sales associates' genitals.
But some sexual fetishes aren't so humorous. Such as Santa Claus. Bad Santas with a line of happy, little children waiting for turns on Santa's velvet-covered lap.
"This is heaven," Dobbert said. "They have a multitude of little children to sit on their laps."
Pedophiles go where children are, Dobbert stressed. They might become mall security guards, swim coaches or youth group leaders. Some hang out where children will flock: Disney World, public pools and athletic events.Dobbert said parents should assign another parent to videotape crowds gathered at children's sporting events and review these tapes to determine whether audience members are harmless parents, friends and grandparents or potential pedophiles scoping out youngsters about which to create fantasies.
Some of these people who are mostly men even videotape sports competitions so they may watch the tapes at home and flesh out their fantasies, Dobbert explained.
"You're a 24-year-old guy. Why do you want to spend your free time with 7-year-old girls?" he asked.
Some may love children and want to volunteer. Others may be turned on by children and think that love will be returned so they go to these hunting grounds, Dobbert added.
The university's own message boards advertising volunteer opportunities so students may fulfill their required 80 hours of community service before graduating are lures for pedophiles seeking a bevy of children to trust them, Dobbert added.
A little-heard-of type of child sex offender, called a hebephile, also is scouring Southwest Florida. Such people want to have sex with children who recently have reached sexual maturity the junior high school pupils.Just as Chicago serial killer John Wayne Gacy Jr. wanted pubescent boys as conquests, "this guy wants virgins," Dobbert said.
Kidnapped hebephile victims usually are killed after being raped, he said, with Utah's Elizabeth Smart a noted exception only because it is believed that she complied with her kidnapper's demands.
Pedophiles and hebephiles often were molested themselves. They link love with fondling and child rape, and early warning signs often appear in prepubescent children, he said. Often, these men and women have mental illnesses as well.
Men with a little boy molestation preference are twice as likely to molest again compared with men who prefer young girls. That might be because young girls are terribly hurt and may scream and report the abuse much more so than young boys, Dobbert said.
Lee County sheriff's Lt. Ron Curtis, who attended the seminar, said parents and teachers must be wary of any adult who isn't a parent or known caregiver who is seen watching children or trying to pick them up.
He said sheriff's deputies often arrest people on loitering charges, but prosecutors often won't demand full psychiatric evaluations to help determine whether the suspect could be a child molester. They should but won't usually, he added, because such evaluations are costly, courts already are backed up and loitering is only a misdemeanor.
"We've gotta get the guys hanging on the chain-link fence watching little kids," Dobbert stressed.
Duane Dobbert is the author of "Halting the Sexual Predators Among Us: Preventing Attack, Rape and Lust Homicide."

Those shoe salesmen are something else. But look at the position they're in when a large lady customer has a gas attack.
"They put your foot in their crotch," said Dobbert
Even Al Bundy would be insulted!!!
"Those shoe salesmen are something else..."
They must do it just for kicks.
Then they better start to toe the line -- or they will get nailed.
I think sex crimes against children are pretty much as low as it gets when it comes to sick and criminal behavior and I work with some of its victims every day, but come on, where is the author going with this? Seems to me he is suggesting that people start being detained and interrogated for what they MIGHT be thinking. What's next? Having a psychological assessment to be admitted to theme parks?

You really have to watch out for those Predators - that stealth field really makes it difficult without IR goggles.
Some have righteous soles, but others are just heels.
As I told my younger brother at the arrival of his first child...
keep an eye on your child...because if you ain't you can bet someone else is.
I watch true crime shows and just about shudder when I consider that "they walk among us".
No kidding. Even the most hardened criminals despise pedophiles and baby killers. It takes a liberal intellectual to sympathize with them.

It makes me think of the book "What We Can't Not Know" by a
natural law commentator whose name
I can never spell.
It seems to take are PhD or a JD from a high-caliber university in order
to extinguish the innate sense of justice that even a convicted murderer can't shake.

Back in the eighties, after the Adam Walsh murder in Florida, my wife and I decided our children would be as protected as possible. We really caught it from a lot of parents.
My wife was a stay at home mom and either picked up or walked them to school each day. Our kids, when they were little weren't even allowed into the front yard without our curtains being open and one of us watching them.
They were allowed to do things with large groups of kids but were told that there were bad people who wanted to hurt them and that they needed to be cautious and never go with anyone but their parents or grandparents, not even close family friends who showed up at school to pick them up. People gave us grief for being overprotective constantly.
Across the street from our home, lived a man we called the "pied piper." He was always with children and even had a special trailer outside his home. The police were watching him, but nearby parents let their kids go to the park and McDonalds and wherever constantly. He was always asking about my kids and being told no. If he even crossed the street while they were playing he knew I would be out of the house like lightning. This went on for several years until our kids grew a bit and couldn't be carried away easily.
Even now, as adults, our kids often say they didn't have as much freedom as some kids their age, but that they know the reason and understood. To me, getting them to adulthood safely was worth it.
More likely they're just looking for any excuse to kill someone else.
Brilliant. It's almost as if this psychologist spent his whole life sheltered in academia, and with years of disciplined research came to understand the techniques of real live parents.
Someday he may actually engage in a consenting, heterosexual relationship that could eventually yield children of his own. Who knows what's possible!
"More likely they're just looking for any excuse to kill someone else."
You're probably right.
Plus, in this case, some of them probably get a buzz from a "two-fer"...
getting to kill someone and actually feel pretty darned good about it...
But it is still interesting to see how "justice" works in the mind of
stone-cold murderers v. enlightened liberal lawyers...
That's what Plato, Aristotle, St. Paul, Aquinas, and numerous others have said. "The law of God is written on the heart," as Paul put it.
It takes a real effort in perversity to wipe out this innate knowledge of good and evil. Ordinary criminals do wrong, but they KNOW they're doing wrong and sometimes they repent because doing wrong makes them feel bad, deep down.
Evil intellectuals do wrong and pretend to think they are doing right. They feel bad too, because there's still a conscience in there somewhere, but unlike criminals they don't know WHY they feel bad. So they just take it out on getting angry, raising other people's taxes, mouthing feel-good stuff about multiculturalism to prove how decent they are, and so on, thinking that will make them feel better. But of course it doesn't, so they just get angier and angrier--at somebody else.
Sorry to question this, but isn't this pretty much a cliche? Something left over from the time when Jimmy Cagney was playing a con in the movies? Don't we now have a society that pretty much only jails druggies and the worst of the worst?
If pedophiles lives were that precarious in the prison system, wouldn't I be reading a lot more about dead prisoners in my local liberal-leaning newspaper (we have a prison in this area)? I've become convinced that they're all fundamentally equal to child rapists anymore, and even a lot of them don't get any meaningful sentences in the blue states.
You still read about cases where these guys are killed in prison. I don't really know how common it is.
There's also a dynamic in prison where anyone who's seen as different gets it in the neck, and that may be operating too.
I wondered why we didn't just shoot them after conviction. Save money and thin the criminal herd. A few simple steps and we don't even have to pay room and board.
