A Russian couple admitted trying to avoid buying a train ticket for their 3-year-old daughter by putting her in a suitcase. Before boarding, the parents stopped off for a few drinks at a Moscow train station and took their eyes off the suitcase, which was stolen by thieves. They panicked, called cops and admitted their nefarious deed.

Did they at least put a hole in the suitcase for breathing purposes?

Who knows. It's a ploy not recommended, even if an air hole is provided.

In the mid 1800s, my great-grandfather supposedly came into this country from europe as a small child (about 5) locked in a steamer trunk carried by his uncle. I think it was to save the cost of a boat ticket, but maybe it was also to get past immigration? No one in the family remembers.

You would need a freight dolly for the luggage though.
