Naval Academy alumni group rejects gay, lesbian chapter

The governing board of the Naval Academy Alumni Association on Thursday rejected a bid from graduates who sought to establish a predominantly gay and lesbian alumni chapter.

It was the second time in two years the Naval Academy's alumni association rejected the gay group, whose members believe it is the first such chapter to seek recognition from a U.S. service academy.

"I think when they reject us today, they are making their discrimination clear," said Jeff Petrie, who founded the group.

The group has been operating and inducting members for more than a year, even though it does not have the official sanction of the alumni association. Now 68 members strong, it is the only group the association has ever denied affiliation.

All 27 trustees who attended the meeting voted to dismiss Petrie's request because his group is narrowly tailored to serve a special interest. Other reasons the association gave for rejecting the group include its scattered membership and the location of its headquarters in San Francisco — a region already served by an alumni chapter.

The board opposes special-interest chapters because their membership would be exclusive, the association wrote in a news release entitled "Naval Academy Alumni Association reaffirms commitment to diversity and inclusiveness."

"Today we received a mixed message, and ironically were rejected on the premise of diversity," Petrie said.

The chapter revamped itself this year in an effort to win recognition. It established its base as the Castro district, a predominantly gay neighborhood of San Francisco, after trustees said last year that new chapters have to be "geographic in nature."

The group also rewrote its bylaws to clarify that it doesn't exclude heterosexual graduates, and it inducted its first straight member.

Leaders of the association said after the meeting that existing chapters should not and do not discriminate against gay and lesbian alumni, and they urged Castro members to join other alumni chapters.

The association cited the larger San Francisco chapter, which is run by a board of directors that includes two openly gay members.

"I'm kind of disappointed this is ongoing," Chet Kolley, president of the San Francisco chapter, said Thursday. "We've tried to obviate the need for a special chapter by being as inclusive as we can."

Petrie, who also serves as secretary of the larger chapter, says Castro members feel more at home in a group run by gay and lesbian alumni. Castro alumni, who live all over the country, say running their own chapter is crucial, he said.

"There is discrimination throughout the alumni chapters, and this is our attempt to escape that," he said.

You reap what you sow, Petrie... Ya all asked for "diversity" and "inclusiveness", and you got it...

As Nelson would say: Ha Ha!

Diversity. I call it perversion. Let's call a spade, a spade. If I could, I would cut San Freakcisco off of the state and set it adrift...

Geographic location: A homo district in San Fran. Wow, that helped a lot didn't it.

It's always something with those people, just living isn't enough, they don't seem to be happy unless they are demanding something new every year.

Well, yes, it is "perversion", certainly. I wasn't commenting on the gay part of it - just that the whole Liberal Agenda of "Diversity" is what caused this fag group to be denied, and personally I find it both ironic and hilarious at the same time ;0)

It just may have something to do with the fact that it's against military regs to be an openly-practicing queer. Nonetheless, these folks want to have this group embraced by the alumni? This is not the world I started out in...

Yes, there is that too, certainly. However, I notice the Academy didn't use that trump card - maybe they are saving that for last, in case they come back demanding a new chapter again next year. Sort of "Ok, you've come back and met the last of our requirements for having a chapter - geographically, and with teh appropriate diversity. However, the fact remains that ya all are gay, and we don't allow Gays in the military. That whole "Don't ask, Don't Tell" thing. You told, so see ya."

I seem to recall that some honorary chapters have been started in the past by female officers inviting WUBAs off campus and in Company 22.

Ping to the family Annapolis Grad.

I'm afraid to ask what "SP" stands for in his case. It certainly doesn't mean "Shore Patrol"...

Where can you find pleasure
Search the world for treasure
Learn science technology
Where can you begin to make your dreams all come true
On the land or on the sea
Where can you learn to fly
Play in sports and skin dive
Study oceanography
Sign of for the big band
Or sit in the grandstand
When your team and others meet

In the navy
Yes, you can sail the seven seas
In the navy
Yes, you can put your mind at ease
In the navy
Come on now, fall in 'n' make a stand
In the navy, in the navy
Can't you see we need a hand
In the navy
Come on, protect the motherland
In the navy
Come on and join your fellow man
In the navy
Come on people, and make a stand
In the navy, in the navy, in the navy (in the navy)

They want you, they want you
They want you as a new recruit

If you like adventure
Don't you wait to enter
The recruiting office fast
Don't you hesitate
There is no need to wait
They're signing up new seamen fast
Maybe you are too young
To join up today
Bout don't you worry 'bout a thing
For I'm sure there will be
Always a good navy
Protecting the land and sea

In the navy
Yes, you can sail the seven seas
In the navy
Yes, you can put your mind at ease
In the navy
Come on now, fall in 'n' make a stand
In the navy, in the navy
Can't you see we need a hand
In the navy
Come on, protect the motherland
In the navy
Come on and join your fellow man
In the navy
Come on people, and make a stand
In the navy, in the navy, in the navy (in the navy)

They want you, they want you
They want you as a new recruit

Who me?

They want you, they want you
They want you as a new recruit

But, but but I'm afraid of water.
Hey, hey look
Man, I get seasick even watchin' it on TV!

They want you, they want you in the navy

Oh my goodness.
What am I gonna do in a submarine?

They want you, they want you in the navy

"I think when they reject us today, they are making their discrimination clear," said Jeff Petrie, who founded the group.

Yep - and when people reject toadstools as not good food, that is also discrimination. Sometimes you have to discriminate between the good and the bad, the healthy and the unhealthy.

I have been waiting for this for years! Why would alumni from the Academy NEED a gay chapter? I mean, do they hold wife swaps or discuss STDs?

Why don't they have an alumni association just for female grads - that would cover the lesbian part...
