Triumph (Bush Triumphs in Canada)
National Review ^ | December 2, 2004 | David Frum [‘David Frum’s Diary’]

Posted on 12/02/2004 5:50:14 PM PST by quidnunc

The Washington Post’s always imaginative White House correspondent Dana Milbank and its dour front-page caption writers would have you believe that President Bush’s Canadian visit occurred in an atmosphere of tight-lipped circumspection. “During his two-day visit to Canada,” the caption writer opined, “Bush outlined a second-term foreign policy that would make international cooperation his administration’s top priority, but the president made clear that such cooperation must occur on his terms.”

Meanwhile, I spent yesterday afternoon fielding calls from Canadians and especially Canadian journalists by no means friendly to the president who just could not stop enthusing about the wit, charm, warmth, and understanding of the president’speech.

Bush’s visit was a diplomatic triumph, from the failure of Canada’s small but vociferous anti-American minority to turn out in the cold streets of Ottawa to the new tone taken by prime minister Paul Martin — and perhaps above all to the laughter and cheers of the president’s audiences.

-snip-

Some critics of the president have in recent years endorsed the strange conceit that the United States is responsible for everything that happens in the Western alliance. If things go well, it’s solely to America’s credit; if things go ill — as they have often done since 9/11 — then it is America’s fault. But other countries have motives and purposes too. France for example has chosen bad relations with the United States for ideological purposes of its own. Germany’s Gerhard Schroeder chose a bad relationship for short-term electoral advantage. And Canada’s Jean Chretien chose a bad relationship in order to appease left-wing members of his governing Liberal party affronted by his relatively non-left economic policies.

What Canadians did by welcoming Americans into their homes on 9/11 really touched me. I even felt a little envious of their countless acts of warm friendship. They certainly have lots of good Samaritans there. Thanks Canada.

Google lists Kerry having Bachelor's degree from Yale, 1966 and law degree from Boston College, 1976. What am I missing? did it also tell you that he trid and failed to get into Harvard? - "W" has a degree from both Yale and Harvard...

No, Google left out the part about Harvard. The only Harvard degree ever conferred that wasn't respected was Dubya's ;-}. Another case of misunderestimation.

Hi,JudyinCanada.

My daughter, hubby and 3 little girls are in Greenwood for a 3 year deployment - he's a U.S. Navy P3 pilot "on loan" to Canada.

They love it in Nova Scotia. They tell me it's my kind of place - (I grew up with my grandparents in northern Maine, not far from the border (New Brunswick) back when family and values and God were paramount.) They tell me it's like I write about (16 years of columns about my childhood and the "old" ways) and that'd I'd fit right in. They love the the people of Nova Scotia...

It sounds like they are really enjoying their stay. That is great. Hopefully, you will visit them there and check it out personally!

I am sad to say that I have NEVER been to the east coast. I hear nothing but positive things about it and want to go, but I'm just not much for travel. Hope you do better than me!

This whole piece - and accompanying - have lifted my spirits.

Once again, George the Giant Killer, slays the dragons.

We are truly blessed - he is bringing our country - the world - back from the precipice...

He is guided by the right principals - gives credit and thanks to God - and I believe God is shielding him and us, because of it.

"I agree .. but to add to the fire .. Bill Clinton was paying visits to Canada (because he had a bimbo there), and was only too happy to cultivate a hate-Bush theme with the members of the Canadian govt., namely the then PM."

Oh yes. Clinton also did as much damage as he could in Britian, Russia and India.

However, these leaders were Clinton's Third Way buddies. As were others, like Shroder and Chirac. The consensus to foil and denigrate President Bush as much as possible in the hopes of guaranteeing Algore the ascendancy and later to guarantee Bush was "a one termer just like his daddy" (if I had a nickle for every time I heard that) seemed to have existed before Clinton PUBLICALLY encouraged the anti-Bush sentiment.

"Wow, thinking about that speech to Congress after 9-11. It still gives me goosebumps to remember how the leader, George W. Bush, spoke, interacted with the congressional members from both parties, shaking hands, reaching out and by his words, actions, and demeanor began healing this country. That speech was beyond powerful. It was beyond awesome. I truly can't find the word."

Me too, and me either. I'm not sure the correct words to express our feelings about that speech exist.

I have the audio of it burned onto CD for posterity. Some day I'll get hold of the video, too. Remember Hillary!s behavior?

I imagine the libs/dims are scratching their heads and moaning: "How could he be so successful in Canada too! THEY like him too!"

Love it ;o)

How COOL that you have a CD of that!! Wow, I'd love to hear that again, is it available on the internet anywhere that you know of?

Mr. Prairie and I just looked at each other after it was done. Finally hubby said something like "that was a darned good speech", LOL. Understatement of the year, yet we just couldn't find words.

Isn't that the episode of eye-rolling that the Junior Senator favored us with? A habit she quickly discarded after finding out how badly it played with the public. Sure hope there's tape of that if we ever have to go up against her in any big election again. Talk about showing true colors.

He left Yale early to enlist in the Navy, later went to Vietnam, got transferred stateside four months later, then launched his political career via the VVAW, so I wasn't aware he'd ever graduated from Yale. Maybe I'M missing something.

Here ya go (Requires Real Player)

Hmmm....now I can get the video. I can tell you the audio and video links weren't on this page until recently. I've hit it enough over the past couple of years in order to get his quotes right. I didn't pay attention to the opening remarks once during that time...was more concerned with the war on terrorism part.

O.K. I’m sorry. I have been too harsh on my Canadian neighbors. I was upset with the small minority of left-wingers who dominated the news coverage.

Thank you for being nice to our president, and please except my apology and forgive my ignorance.

Well .. the Clinton visits I was talking about were after Bush was elected (which eliminated anything to do with Algore) .. and I'm talking about visits related to the run-up to the war in Iraq.

In fact, Hillary was also involved .. travling around the world "promoting her book" .. yeah right!

It was during one of these trips to London, where Bill Clinton told Blair that he better dump Bush because if Blair didn't, it could cost Blair his job. And .. I believe it was shortly after that statement that the Wilson mess exploded in the media (which is why I have always believed Hillary was involved in it). Thank GOD Blair did not buy the threat.
