An immigration reform organization is concerned that the man President Bush has tapped to be the next U.S. attorney general has been involved with an organization that opposes the enforcement of immigration laws.
The pro-life community has already expressed its concerns about White House counsel Alberto Gonzales, noting that while a Texas Supreme Court justice he chose not to rule against abortion, in any situation. Now the Washington, DC-based Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) is calling Gonzales to task for his reported involvement with the National Council of La Raza, which has endorsed his nomination for attorney general.
FAIR spokeswoman Susan Tully says La Raza unabashedly supports rights for illegal aliens. "When you're talking about the attorney general of the United States, he would be considered the 'top cop' [for the country]," Tully explains. "And if his leanings and bias are sympathetic to illegal alien lawbreakers, that should be a huge concern to those of us who believe in law and order -- and that those laws are there for a reason."
And Tully points out that the phrase "la raza" means "the race" for a reason. "To take it in context, would you be concerned if there a white nominee who had been involved with the Ku Klux Klan or some other white supremacist-type of group?" she asks.
Tully says if a former Klansman had been nominated to the nation's highest law-enforcement position, there would be no end to the media outrage, demanding that such an individual could not possibly be the attorney general. "Yet there is no outrage at all that [Gonzales] has belonged in the past and been involved in that organization [La Raza]," she notes.
In 2001, Gonzales was asked if his own personal feelings about abortion would play a role in his decisions. He responded: "The question is, what is the law, what is the precedent, what is binding in rendering your decision. Sometimes, interpreting a statute, you may have to uphold a statute that you may find personally offensive."
If confirmed as the new AG, Gonzales would have an opportunity to apply that same philosophy to the issue of illegal immigration.
You may have already seen this, but ping anyway.

Thanks for the link in your post #52.
Yes, dem Messican illegal alien lawbreakers.
Who is he? RINO or Constitutionalist?
I don't think some people realize that the Attorney General is the nations top cop. I just can't imagine Bush nominating someone that has the La Raza types partying in the streets...It's like a bad Hollywood movie.
The first time I heard of Alberto Gonzales was when I read about his ruling that teen age girls didn't need their parents' permission for abortion. He was wrong about that, and that definitely was a liberal decision, yet he claims to be a conservative...
The conservative label under this administration has been hijacked by all kinds of liberal so-called republicans that use the conservative name to hide their seditious left wing agenda. When they are done sullying the name of conservatism, true conservatives might have to find a new name.
Speaking of movies this administration reminds me of the movie "Invasion of the Body Snachers". It's like the administration puts pods under the beds of congressional republicans and they wake up as mind numb zombies ready to do whatever the prez wants.
Good comparison. Many of the so-called Republicans have become unrecognizable and scary, in that they have gone from right to left in four short years. Bizarro world...

The Ford Foundation, for example, in 1968 single-handedly funded the creation of The Mexican American Legal Defense Fund (MALDEF) and The Southwest Council Of La Raza, later renamed National Council Of La Raza. Both groups are radical mouthpieces for the "rights" of illegal immigrants (including the advocacy of college tuition for illegals at state universities), have managed to force bilingual education in many areas and remain wholly unrepresentative of the average Hispanic-American citizenry.
"The Gray Davis Recall was IMO a defining moment that signaled a new change of attitudes in the electorate"
The best thing about that was proof that someone can run an election and get elected in 90 days. Most of the work our legistlators do is campaigning. It never ends.
There aren't any, except that LaRaza endorsed him.
Not according to the original post on this thread:
"Alberto Gonzales served with distinction on the board of directors of one of NCLR's oldest and most respected affiliates , the Association for the Advancement of Mexican Americans (AAMA) in Houston, Texas. Moreover, during his tenure as White House Counsel, he has been one of the most accessible members of the White House staff to NCLR and other Hispanic organizations."
David Duke endorsed Ronald Reagan in 1980, so that must have made Ronald Reagan a member of the KKK.
Do you have a source or a link for that? I honestly don't recall David Duke endorsing Ronald Reagan in 1980. In fact, I don't remember David Duke being on the national radar screen back in 1980. Where did you get your information on that?
See how that works?
Even if your claim that David Duke endorsed Ronald Reagan back in 1980 were true, it would not equate with Alberto Gonzales serving on the board of directors of one of NCLR?s oldest affiliates and being one of the most accessible members of the White House staff to NCLR.
I don't know too much about Mr. Gonzales, but if it is true that he has ties to a racist organization it should be a cause for concern, and I don't see how it would equate to a candidate being endorsed by a racist with whom he has no ties and over who's endorsement he has no control.
This frenzy about Alberto Gonzales is a red herring put up by the paranoids around here who think every Mexican wants to refight the battle of San Jacinto.

Thanks for the ping-
>>>I'm not in favor of anyone who has La Raza ties, directly OR indirectly, and I don't think it's wise of President Bush to push his nomination for Attorney General.<<<
I'm with you, kiddo! I called the White House comment line and said basically this very thing.
>>>The first time I heard of Alberto Gonzales was when I read about his ruling that teen age girls didn't need their parents' permission for abortion.<<<
I didn't know that, but it's just one more reason to be concerned about him!
UGH!

In other words, these groups advocate violating our laws and our Constitution to the advantage of one racial or ethnic group: Mexican or Mexican-American. They have already obtained their stay on the enactment of Prop. 200 in Arizona.
I am not confident that Gonzales will be the tough Attorney General we need on ANY issue, let alone illegal immigration, affirmative action and abortion. His experience seems provincial and narrow.
I think Vicente is just a clever bully and George can't see it. The amnesty lite proposal is also a way of rewarding the illegal employers.
