Some Abstinence Programs Mislead Teens, Report Says
Washington Post ^ | Dec 2, 2004 | Ceci Connoly

Many American youngsters participating in federally funded abstinence-only programs have been taught over the past three years that abortion can lead to sterility and suicide, that half the gay male teenagers in the United States have tested positive for the AIDS virus, and that touching a person's genitals "can result in pregnancy," a congressional staff analysis has found.

Those and other assertions are examples of the "false, misleading, or distorted information" in the programs' teaching materials, said the analysis, released yesterday, which reviewed the curricula of more than a dozen projects aimed at preventing teenage pregnancy and sexually transmitted disease.

"I don't think we ought to lie to our children about science," said Rep. Henry A. Waxman (D-Calif.), who led the congressional staff analysis.

In providing nearly $170 million next year to fund groups that teach abstinence only, the Bush administration, with backing from the Republican Congress, is investing heavily in a just-say-no strategy for teenagers and sex. But youngsters taking the courses frequently receive medically inaccurate or misleading information, often in direct contradiction to the findings of government scientists, said the report, by Rep. Henry A. Waxman (D-Calif.), a critic of the administration who has long argued for comprehensive sex education.

"and that touching a person's genitals 'can result in pregnancy,'"

I guess Waxman's wife managed to convince him when he said he wanted to have kids that it was not necessary that either of them ever touch each other's genitals in any way.

Sounds exactly like propaganda from the Pro-Abortion and Homo communities.

Same, same

Is this result concluded from actually reviewing the materials or asking the students questions?

I doubt the materials say any of this, and I doubt the teachers taught any of this. I suspect the kids would believe the same things no matter the curriculum because they believe things their peers tell them as often as what their teachers tell them.

Shalom.

touching a person's genitals "can result in pregnancy,"

This is true. Touching of genitals leads to unzipping of pants which leads to intercourse which results in pregnancy.

Irony here. When I graduated from college in the late 70's, I went to Washington because I thought I wanted to work on the Hill. I learned that Waxman had a job opening, so I tripped on over there. A most sexist interview. Here I was with a graduate degree from UVA and all the guy (his AA) could do was ask me how fast I could type. Hypocrite of all hypocrites.

I agree. I have a friend who does this full time. Their materials are excellent and they're accurate. The kids respond to it well. It's the teachers and consultants who have given them a problem.

"Many American youngsters participating in federally funded abstinence-only programs have been taught over the past three years that abortion can lead to sterility and suicide"

It can.

"that half the gay male teenagers in the United States have tested positive for the AIDS virus"

I don't know about the numbers, but AIDS is a huge risk in any type of pre-marital encounter, but most especially between homosexual males.

"that touching a person's genitals "can result in pregnancy,"

I'm not buying the claim that this is being taught. Sounds like they have taken something out of context and give it a twist.

Absolutely true.

My Daughter had an abortion (without my knowledge because she moved out), has since had to miscarriages and was told by her doctor that she may never be able to conceive.

I also know of a young girl who, after having one, decided that she could no longer live with the thought that she has terminated her baby, because her boyfriend left her when she got pregnant, and committed suicide.

I deal with kids a lot as a Scouter. When talking about anything, including but not limited to sex and drugs, it's important that you don't lie to them or mislead them. Otherwise, when they find out that you did, they stop believing anything you say. If factually inaccurate or misleading information is being put out in these programs, (and I wouldn't assume so on this one source) it needs to be changed.

It's the teachers and consultants who have given them a problem.

Well, not just them. When I was in High School we had a very complete sex education course with information on sperm travelling through to the ovaries, all the birth control methods, including abstinence, everything you ever wanted to know but were afraid to ask. It was quite interesting given that I went to a Roman Catholic High School. Anyway, one girl told us you didn't have to have intercourse to get pregnant. She knew because she had read it in Dear Abbey (Abby?).

It takes more than materials and a classroom to educate a child.

Shalom.

What did Clinton teach them?

That oral sex is not sex and that rape has a statute of limitations.

Believe it or not, I remember that. The point that Abby was trying to make, and correctly so, that it IS possible to get pregnant without penetration. She was warning girls not to pet without their clothes on. Enough rubbing the right way and that sperm can get in and do its deed. It DOES happen, but it's rare.
