NEW ULM, Minn. -- Too bad firefighters didn't have a pile of popcorn handy -- or better yet, loads of lobster tails. An intense fire consumed half of the roof of the Associated Milk Producers Inc. butter packaging plant, sending melted butter flowing out of the facility. There were no immediate reports of injuries, but officials worried that the melted butter would interfere with the railroad tracks bordering the plant's east end. The plant was holding an estimated 3 million pounds of butter at the time of the fire Wednesday. A plant employee discovered the fire in a utility area, and the 30 workers in the butter packaging plant were evacuated and sent home. Officials were investigating the cause of the buttery blaze.

Reminds me of a fire in Madison Wisconsin about 15 years ago - in which a similar amount of butter and cheese was liquefied in a frozen foods warehouse fire. Amusing and impressive a the time - but a massive nuisance for months as the stench of the rotting butter (which had spread for blocks) intensified. Mmmmmmmmm!.

Oil on the tracks would be a problem. My cousin, who was an engineer for the Great Northern Railroad (now Butlington Northern) used to tell about approaching the Rockies from the east, and getting shut down by a migrating horde of army worms crossing the track. Had to back his freight train up about 50 milesto a siding, and then go over the hill 4-5 cars at a time.
