TOM SIGNS OFF
New York Post ^ | 12/02/04

Good night, Tom.

An emotional Tom Brokaw, 64, signed off from the "NBC Nightly News" yesterday for the last time, thanking viewers of his top-rated evening newscast for watching him, his co-workers and especially "The Greatest Generation" of World War II veterans he has profiled so often in several books.

"Whatever the story, I had only one objective — to get it right," he said in the closing moments of the broadcast as he recounted what he has learned after nearly 23 years in the anchor chair.

"[The Greatest Generation] did not give up their personal beliefs and greatest passions, but they never stopped learning from each other and, most of all, they did not give up on the idea that we're all in this together. "We still are," he continued.

The Greatest Generation...

As long as they were right-thinking doctrinaire Democrats.

Out of the three anchors who oversaw the demise of old media dominance, I have to say that Brokaw was the best. Of course, considering that the other two were Jennings and Rather, that ain't saying much. But he WAS the best of the three, in my opinion. (Maybe "least offensive" would be a better way to put it.)

I'd have to agree. In my youth, before the days of 24 hour cable news, Brokaw was where I got my daily news fixture.

Browkaw was smart in honoring The Greatest Generation. Now he has a respectable legacy, unlike Rather who goes out as a certified shameless nutcase.

Come on Tom, fess up! Brok-aw was not very good, just the least bad of a real bad bunch of news readers. The only thing he can do for his legacy is to come clean and write a book about his own fraudulent career. We know and he knows it was phony and he knows he is definitely not of the Greatest Generation. More than likely he will become the nobody he has always been. Good riddance!

Kind of harsh, but I have to agree.

First of all, the "Greatest Generation" is in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Second, I still believe we will see Brokaw in the US Senate, or something equivalent.

I'm out of the loop on this one: Why is he quitting at the same time as Dan Blather?

Forgive me, please, if I'm missing something obvious...

:D
