International Anti-Corruption Day [UN marks Dec 9: anniv Convention against Corruption NOT humor]
United Nations site ^ | unknown

International Anti-Corruption Day on 9 December marks one year since the signing conference for the United Nations Convention against Corruption was held in Mérida, Mexico.

In the last year, over 110 countries have signed on to the Convention and nine have ratified it. Ratificiation by 30 Member States is necessary for the Convention to enter into force.

Effective action against corruption is the responsibility of governments, and implementation of the Convention rests in the hands of States. Civil society and the private sector also have an active role to play in these efforts by supporting governments and holding them accountable. However, the capacity to take these actions does not always exist in many developing and least developed countries. For this reason, UNODC provides technical assistance through legal advisory services for the ratification of the Convention and technical cooperation projects focusing on preventive measures.

The Convention must come into force as soon as possible to provide the legal framework for countries to criminalize corrupt practices, as well as to cooperate to deny safe havens to corrupt officials and to help each other recover illicitly acquired assets.

Nigerian Minister of Trade:

We celebrate this holiday scrupulously.

(Leaves thread. Takes bribe from Chevron liason to Nigeria. Passes bribe onto Minister of Defense. Who, in turn, bribes him not to mention this bribe.)

Well, when you think about it, when you have a question about corruption, why not go to the experts in the field?

Once in awhile you run into a story that is so perfect there really isn't much you can add in commentary. I am stupefied. Gobsmacked. The darkest sense of humor in the most hardened cynic in the world couldn't improve on this one. I've tried.

TAS did an hilarious parody of "Transparency International" and their latest report-this was several years ago-on the level of corruption among the nation states of the U.N.

I know I have it somewhere; if I can find it in the next couple of weeks, I'll try to post an excerpt on this thread.

...marks one year since the signing conference for the United Nations Convention against Corruption was held in Mérida Mordida, Mexico.

Always ready to serve.
