CHICAGO (AP) Mayor Richard Daley's son, prompted by a lifelong desire to serve in the military, will soon report to active duty as an enlisted soldier in the Army's regular airborne infantry.
``It's been in the back of my mind for some time,'' Patrick Daley told the Chicago Sun-Times in Tuesday's editions. ``I left West Point during my freshman year when I was 18 years old and always remembered their motto, 'Duty, Honor and Country.' But I was so young and not really old enough to understand what it really meant. But I know now.''
Daley, 29, graduated with honors in June from the University of Chicago with a master's degree in business and could have pursued lucrative job offers from investment banking or private equity firms. But instead, he decided to join the Army and as an enlisted man.
``In the military, doors go up and out rather than down,'' he said. ``It's a close bet that I may make a career out of the military, and it's better to start out at the bottom.''
The Sept. 11 terrorist attacks also played a role in his decision, said Daley, one of Richard and Maggie Daley's four children, including Nora, Elizabeth and a second son, Kevin, who died.
His parents and close friends were not surprised by his plans, Daley said.
``Dad is very supportive and mom is doing just what mothers are supposed to do, worrying about her son,'' he said.
Daley said his activation date could be between Christmas and New Year's Day.
``There are many paths of service policeman, fireman, political and the military but it's an all-volunteer era,'' Daley said. ``I've always wanted to find a way to serve ... just like my grandfather and father. Think of it. It's amazing. I get to serve my country.''
Am I to understand he dropped out his freshman year at West Point? I have a nephew who went and stuck it out. He talks often about the "weeding out" process. He was there as a wrestler. Said the Freshman year was the most brutal of his life. He's 36 now and considering whether or not to retire in 3 years.
Cool
I just hope, he being a daley, he is not joining simplyt to be another leftist/communist insider bent on the destruction of our military from within.
As Antonio Gramsci (hillary's spiritual mentor) has stated:
< snip >
...C. Gradual revolution through infiltration & subversion by revolutionaries
......1. Infiltrate the State: elective & appointed office; judgeships
......2. Infiltrate the military: enlist & subvert from within
......3. Infiltrate justice: undermine and discredit state constitutions
......4. Infiltrate education: professors & administrators
......5. Infiltrate & discredit religion: scoundrels as clergymen
......6. Register, then license, then confiscate all privately held weapons

So the son of the Chicago Godfather graduated "with honors" from the university of Chicago. I'm SO confident the grading was "fair and balanced" sarcasm..off
Great post! This guy could be the next Zell Miller Democrat...let's do what we can to encourage him. AND, this could be a huge opportunity to take back the Land of Lincoln for the GOP....
Yeah. Right.
Maybe this guy is for real, and maybe he's looking to do another "John Kerry".
When someone from the Daley political family goes all pollyanna about being a "regular guy" I get suspicious.

His new drill sergeant could care less about his background and family. Good for him - I wish him well. It will be an eye-opening experience for him.
No offense, but being that you're from S.C. you might no know that the University of Chicago is one of the top Universities in the USA. It's an 'Ivy League' school and has zero connection to the city of Chicago. Also, the first Nuclear Recation ever was done there under the bleechers of the old and now raized football stadium.
So if the kid graduated with honors his IQ is "way UP there", unlike his father who barely graduated from DeLaSalle HS (I know, I had a friend who went there with Richie Daley).
BTW, the University of Chicago has some of the ugliest coeds I've ever seen (shudder). Only Northwestern University (Evanston, IL) can compete with the number of 'two-baggers'.
Is this suggesting that the other son died on 9/11,
or did he just die sometime in the past?
Richard M.'s youngest son Kevin died of complications from spina bifida at the age of 2 1/2 in 1981.
I did not sign up to serve America. I honor those, even Mayor Daley's son, who do so. God Bless him. May He have a successful career.
It's not a "cheap shot" it's an observation of a powerful political family.
The guy may or may not be legitimate and time alone will tell what his true motives are, but he doesn't get a pass just because he "seems" to be doing the right thing.
It's not the guy's fault that he was born into the Daley family, but every Daley gets looked at closely, and he's no exception.
The Grandfather was hated by the American left as he was your classic old school ethnic a** kicker who took care of his own, the son (current mayor), has said very positive things about the President and takes no crap from anyone. Having grown up Irish Catholic Democrat I recognize these guys as the Dem Party of my youth. The son is their only hope and I bet you he is the real thing.
Well you have to congratulate the young man.
But going into boot camp at 29 will not be a picnic. LOL
Good to know that there are patriots in 'Rat families too.
I wish him luck.
Semper Fi,
Kelly
I, too, honor any man who serves his country, but if the last election has taught us anything it's that there are men who join the military for purely political purposes.
Maybe Daley is a true patriot who just wants to serve. That would be great. But, the family he comes from has left a mark on American politics that taints everyone with a Daley name.
Why don't we just see what he does, hope for the best, and let time tell us the true story.
Can it.
I'm a Chicagoan and don't particularly like Daley, but he -- and all of us -- should be extremely proud of his son. First, the University of Chicago is arguably one of the top three or four universities in the world. You do not get in to the UC graduate school, let alone graduate with honors, on the basis of "connections." UC MBA graduates average $125k+/year starting salary. The fact that this guy walked down to the recruiting office and enlisted in the Airborne is, in a word, awesome.
Good on ya, Kevin Daley. Chicago tips it collective hat.
