CHICAGO (AP) Mayor Richard Daley's son, prompted by a lifelong desire to serve in the military, will soon report to active duty as an enlisted soldier in the Army's regular airborne infantry.
``It's been in the back of my mind for some time,'' Patrick Daley told the Chicago Sun-Times in Tuesday's editions. ``I left West Point during my freshman year when I was 18 years old and always remembered their motto, 'Duty, Honor and Country.' But I was so young and not really old enough to understand what it really meant. But I know now.''
Daley, 29, graduated with honors in June from the University of Chicago with a master's degree in business and could have pursued lucrative job offers from investment banking or private equity firms. But instead, he decided to join the Army and as an enlisted man.
``In the military, doors go up and out rather than down,'' he said. ``It's a close bet that I may make a career out of the military, and it's better to start out at the bottom.''
The Sept. 11 terrorist attacks also played a role in his decision, said Daley, one of Richard and Maggie Daley's four children, including Nora, Elizabeth and a second son, Kevin, who died.
His parents and close friends were not surprised by his plans, Daley said.
``Dad is very supportive and mom is doing just what mothers are supposed to do, worrying about her son,'' he said.
Daley said his activation date could be between Christmas and New Year's Day.
``There are many paths of service policeman, fireman, political and the military but it's an all-volunteer era,'' Daley said. ``I've always wanted to find a way to serve ... just like my grandfather and father. Think of it. It's amazing. I get to serve my country.''
If you read the Suntimes article you will also see that he is a big Bush supporter.
A Daley one may actually be able to respect. That's a surprise. Of course, his dad set such a low bar (thinking it's okay to watch the citizens of Chicago on hundreds/thousands of cameras, and tearing up perfectly good airfields in the middle of the night for no good reason) that it would be hard to go that low.
Having gone to Northwestern (Kellogg), I agree with you.
I'm a U of C graduate. I know.
The girls there are not much to write home about. They weren't in 1980, and they aren't now.
Girls in coke bottle glasses who wear backpacks with the American flag sewn on upside-down, a Palestinian kaffiyeh around their necks, and a serious anger-management problem made us all long for Northwestern (the Party School of the Midwest...).
Be Seeing You,
Chris
Was Pat Tillman an officer?
You should be ashamed of yourself. Or maybe you're just here to infiltrate and subvert.
I don't know, I assume
Nope, nope, and no.
yeh, Im thinking 'The Godfather'.
"God Bless him. May He have a successful career."
BUMP!!!
That's not news to anyone. I object to your smearing Daly with nothing but his family name to support your assertions.

"Yes , we are at war."
No kidding, what are you doing?
Gee, two posts intoit and you come up with I'm a DUer. But, I notice that you did not answer the question...what are you doing in the war effort. My own activities are pretty wide and include thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours. How about you?
His grades at the U of C were not affected by his father. It is a private institution for one and has great integrity. NO ONE is given anything there.
Not quoted is the part of the article which speaks of his friends knowing that he is a great admirer of President Bush and his confirmation of that to the reporter as well as his speaking of the impact of 9/11 on him.
Believe me Gramsci is a writer that the local RAT party has never read.
And Hillary has nothing to do with any of this so why you would bring her into it is beyond me.
So you are a UoCer too? It is funny to see those claiming this fellow may have had his grades enhanced BECAUSE of his father utterly unaware that it would more likely be the case that they were reduced by that connection.
This claim is made while they would vehemently deny the Left's claim that Bush got a free ride at Yale and Harvard.
Kerry went in ONLY because he HAD to. He did not do so as part of any paranoid plan you may have buzzing around your brain.
