Dolphin 'heros' that save swimmers from sharks meet a grisly death

(You should read the article from last week first... )

=========================================

Wellington - New Zealand fishermen may have killed two of the dolphins that recently helped protect swimmers from a Great White shark attack, lifeguards said at the weekend.

Two dolphins were found dead in a river in Whangarei Harbour, on North Island, said animal protection officer Jim Boyd.

Officials believe they may have been mutilated by criminals poaching fish.

Lifeguard Rob Howes said he feared the two dolphins may have been part of the pod that ganged up to protect swimmers from a circling Great White.

"This is how we repay them for their help," he said.

There are several stories of downed US naval aviators in the Pacific in WW II who had to shoot dolphins who were pushing their life rafts ashore..unfortunately towards Japanese occupied islands..The pilots preferred to wait for rescue by US subs

hmm smart enough to corale a bunch of human swimmers, bold enough to face a great white, blind enough to miss fishing nets?

yes i know those nets can be tricky. But even a dog will figure out..lots of fish + human boat + dead dolphins = bust out

No good deed goes unpunished. Seriously, though, how do they know? What makes them think they "may" be the same ones?

Ahhh...but they might have been Japanese dolphins trying to take them prisoner.

Didn't think of that did you!

You know I'm all over the idea of protecting flipper from poaching and tuna nets and such, but the juxtaposition of these two stories so close together just reeks of a setup. I love the feel good story of the dolphins protecting man from the evil shark, but it sure is odd. Why would dolphins "protect" anyone but their own?

Then within 2 weeks dolphins, "probably from the same pod!" (how would we have any idea of that) are found murdered by the same evil species that the dolphins so nobly saved.

This is an allegorical tale fit for Aesop's fables. I hate to call it a fable without any proof, but it just doesn't pass the smell test. Pardon the obvious pun, but something smells fishy!

Hmm, sounds kind of like US Soldiers helping Iraqis only to be ambushed days later by the same animals.

"Then within 2 weeks dolphins, "probably from the same pod!" (how would we have any idea of that) are found murdered by the same evil species that the dolphins so nobly saved."

In many places there are dolphin watchers. People who give tours to tourists and who literally 'know' each dolphin individually, in a given area. Dolphins are territorial.

I don't know if this story is true or not, but knowing something about dolphins and the people who watch them, I have no reason not to believe it.

You can tell by markings around the head. If you've ever seen dolphins up close, you can tell them apart. All they'd need is the people who the dolphins rescued to come and identify them. I've seen tons of dolphins up close - you can tell. Of course...doesn't mean they are just saying they are the ones, but if they had people there who'd seen them before, then there's far less doubt.

They were wearing "I saved a human and all I got was this stupid t-shirt"... pretty easy really.

I'm pretty skeptical of the whole story.

The guy in this article who claims "they may have been part of the pod" is the same guy that claims the dolphins saved him.

So first, with no evidence, he claims that dolphins saved his life and the lives of his daughters and two friends.

Two weeks later, he claims that some dolphins killed in fishing nets "may have been those very same dolphins."

Then, in this article, he states that “whoever mutilated the dolphins should be castrated for indiscriminate murder.”

He also makes it clear that he hopes the story will lead to a “public outcry against the use of nets.”

I’m smelling setup from day one.

I can't give you an answer as to why dolphins would protect humans, but myths and legends abound from various peoples (especially maritime societies) throughout recorded history of dolphins saving people adrift in the ocean by bringing them to shore.

They weren't protecting the people, they were keeping food away from their enemy.
