Contested Ukrainian Election Exposes Old Fractures

On Ukraina television last week, viewers caught images of Viktor Yushchenko, the opposition candidate in this country's contested presidential election, greeting voters and kissing babies, standard glad-handing by a pol on the stump.

The broadcast of benevolent images of Yushchenko on a Russian language channel that stridently supports his opponent, Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych, was short-lived. Just as suddenly, the sequence cut to historical footage of Adolf Hitler, also greeting supporters and caressing the foreheads of German children thrust toward him by their beaming parents.

The message, one that has been hammered home for months now, was clear: Yushchenko is a fascist.

A key ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov attended the rally with Yanukovych, razing fears in Kiev that the Kremlin, which had backed Yanukovych, might encourage separatism or at least view moves toward it as a bargaining tool for ongoing talks on resolving the electoral crisis.

"On the one hand, we see the sabbath of witches who have been fattened up with oranges and who pretend that they represent the whole of the nation; on the other hand, we see the peaceful power of constructive forces that has gathered in this hall," Luzhkov said in comments broadcast on Russia's NTV television.

Yuri Luzhkov, the mayor of Moscwow, led the campaign to bring back the toppled statue of Soviet Cheka founder Felix Dzerzhinsky to Lubyanka Square. Luzhkov is connected to Marc Rich as well as such Russian Mafia figures as Semion Mogilevich, and Vladimir Gusinsky

The Ukrainian TV stations running the Soros-like "Yushchenko is a Nazi" campaign are run by President Kuchma's oligarch cronies Viktor Pinchuk and Viktor Medvedchuk. Soros has funded Medvedchuk in the past and is a partner of Pinchuk, Kuchma's son-in-law.

Before the election Pinchuk invited Soros to an official visit to Ukraine, as well as others such as Wesley Clark, Richard Holbrooke, Zbigniew Brzezinski, and Russian oligarch Mikhail Khodorkovsky.

There is no evidence that Soros has ever funded Yushchenko.

The whole Ukrainian thing is a giant mess. Hopefully it will be sorted out peacefully and another election will be held. Absent that their will be chaos.

There is no evidence that Soros has ever funded Yushchenko.

The evidence has been shown to you many times by many different Freepers. If you don't want to read the posts to you check out keyword soros

Keyword: Soros

Shadow of Anti-Semitism over Ukraine's Disputed Election
Even more bizarre than the defence of the right of an anti-Semite to disseminate his wares by “pro-Western” Ukrainian politicians like Yushchenko, Julia Timoshenko and Aleksandr Moroz is the fact that Mr. Yushchenko’s candidacy for president of Ukraine is openly backed by the famous American billionaire philanthropist, George Soros, himself a survivor of the Holocaust.

THE FACTS ON THE UKRAINIAN MELODRAMA
USAID's grant for election monitors went only to activists known for their hostility to Yanukovych; they delivered predictable results. It is ironic that some of those activists are also funded by billionaire George Soros—President Bush's arch-enemy—whose investment in Yushchenko's victory is said to be $75 million. "Two generations ago we had the Comintern," says a Western analyst familiar with the situation. "Now we have the Demintern and its related NGOs which have an increasing global reach."

Soros has been involved in promoting Yu for a long time. here is an article from 2001.

SOROS INTERFERING (In Ukraine) (March 2001)
In his letter, entitled "Step Aside, Mr. Kuchma," Soros calls on Kuchma to hand over his duties to Prime Minister Viktor Yushchenko while the investigation into Gongadze’s murder goes forward.

Your first source is the BHHRG, also known as OSCEwatch, and is not a reputable source. Soros has not openly backed Yushchenko. He did not endorse either candidate.

Your second source is Chronicles Magazine, which is also not reputable, and makes no reference to as to the source of this 75 million charge. It doesn't say who he gave the money to or who is making the claim.

Finally, Soros urged Kuchma to step down because of the Gongazde scandal in favor of Yushchenko only because Yushchenko was the Prime Minister at the time. This does not imply support of Yushchenko, only a rebuke of Kuchma.

Thank you for your rapid response. It's looks like you have read these sources before.

There is no evidence that Soros has ever funded Yushchenko.

You may not like these sources but there is another side of the story for those who want to look for it. The liberal media is not going to report the truth.

I am not interested in having a battle of propaganda with someone who I consider dishonest. I just wanted to demonstrate the fact and urge others to read the rest of the links at Keyword: Soros

When dishonest propagandists are asked to prove the assertion that Soros gave Yushchenko 75 million dollars, they backpedal and suggest that Soros funded his "base."

There is no proof that Soros ever gave Yushchenko a dime, but I have shown that he has supported and received support from Yanukovych's supporters.

Senator Richard Lugar, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, was an election monitor during both phases.

Today Lugar told Chris Wallace of Fox News Sunday of rampant fraud and intimidation, employees forced to hand over their absentee ballots to bosses, the same for teachers and other organizations.

Lugar said he and others warned the government of absentee ballot fraud during the first phase, but the government turned a deaf ear.

Lugar reminded Wallace that Putin had lectured Bush that "democracy is not the same in all countries".

yeeeey, we found the caps key. most of the articles in that search mention nothing about soros. you simply link to the keyword search in hopes that noone will actually check it.

tough. theres only a couple articles that mention his name.

simply telling someone to do a keyword search doesnt prove there are articles about that keyword.

Most of the articles mention Soros in the article. You must have given up after the first 3 articles. The rest comment on Soros in posts. I repeat, cause I know your not very smart, I have never added a keyword to an article In my entire time here at FR. If you can prove I have then do it or shut the F up.

Excellent reading and insight on why/how George Soros may well fit into the ongong Ukraine puzzle.

(Links from #17 by Once-Ler - thank you.)

Excerpt from "The Soros Family's Dance around Death" link:

_________________________________________

"Noted financier and philanthropist George Soros was a 13-year-old living in Budapest, Hungary, when the Nazis occupied the city in March 1944. Soros, a Jew, escaped death by assuming a new identity and disappearing from sight for the remainder of World War II. The story of the survival of the Soros family is told in Masquerade: Dancing around Death in Nazi-Occupied Hungary, a newly published, gripping account-an account that had gone largely unnoticed-written over 35 years ago in Esperanto by George's father, Tivadar Soros (1894-1968)."
