Boycott the United Way – Give the American Way

If you read this month’s issue of the American Legion Magazine you will find a story detailing the continuing attacks again the Boy Scouts of America by the ACLU, the United Way, the anti-Christian movement and gay rights activists. Unfortunately, since the magazine isn’t on-line I can’t provide a URL but I am providing a URL to their press release (http://www.legion.org/?section=pub_relations&subsection=pr_listreleases&content=pr_press_release&id=249), titled Legion to Pentagon: Stand up for Scouting!. I don’t know where this assault on core values held by the majority of the American public is going to end but I think its about time to start fighting back. It seems now, with over 60 local United Way chapters refusing to accept pledges to the Boy Scouts, that we the people can only demonstrate our compassion if we have the politically correct mindset…Pro-gay, pro-abortion, anti-Christian. I say bunk. I say boycott the United Way and its federal equivalent, the Combined Federal Campaign. What say you?

I think we should give directly to the charity or service organization of our choosing and to hell with the establishment, PC correct lack-of-do-gooding United Way. Moreover, I think its time for someone to mount a campaign that challenges the United Way. I think The American Way would be a good choice of a name. It should be an umbrella organization that accepts contributions for all recognized charities and public service organizations including those that support belief in God, belief in marriage between a man and woman exclusively, and the right of unborn children to life. What say you?

From now on I refuse to contribute to the United Way or the Combined Federal Campaign. What say you?

I will never give a dime to the United Way. Terrible track record.

I refuse to donate to the United Way to begin with. Far too much of the money they collect goes to the people running the organization, and not enough goes to the people that the money is supposed to be helping.

I agree. I've always had a problem with a charity that had a CEO making a high 6 figure salary. However, when I was active duty the pressue to give was, let me just say, extreme.

Every once in a while my husband and the soldiers in his company are encouraged to give to some charity or other. Of course, the CO and 1st Sergeant say that they can't force them to contribute. The only thing is, they don't get to go home until they voluntarily decide to contribute.

I don't like the idea of umbrella organizations. I like to choose where my money goes. And I want as little as possible spent on overhead.

I have a problem with a so called "charities" that encourage companies to strong arm their employees to contribute to the "charity" so the companies can be showered with positive community publicity.

This year my employer made each manager personally hand out the already filled-out United Way forms to each employee in their department. If an employee chose not to give, they had to write "zero" on the amount space and sign the sheet, and then go up front and explain to "the man" why they were not giving. This is not limited to civilian workplaces either, as the same thing happened when I was in the Navy.

About 12 years ago I worked part time at a Dillards Department Store. Like many corporations and businesses, they pushed for 100 per cent participation by it's employees. The United Way representative was very rude and hateful when I refused to contribute, mainly because of the scandal that had rocked the United Way not long before that. I choose to give to my own charities, mainly local. I will add that the Boy Scouts should become a privately funded organization. As a scout myself, I have fond memories and the impact scouting had on my life

I've always steered clear of the United Way because the American Red Cross is affiliated with them. My dad hated the Red Cross because of the way they conducted themselves in Europe during the second world war. My dad told me how the Red Cross was around behind the lines selling coffee and donuts to the soldiers as the returned from the front. He told me that the soldier always walked by the Red Cross tent and went to the Salvation Army tent where the donuts were free. The soldiers always left the SA a donation for the free donuts.
The Red Cross showed their true colors after 911 when they tried to keep about half of the money donated to the 911 victims family's.
This low rent attempt to grab the cash coupled with frequent examples of the United Way management's inappropriate use of donated funds have turned me into a United Way nonparticipant.

I give to the needy all year long through my Church. I also give to the Salvation Army, the Humane Society and the Toy and Joy Makers. I've never given to the United Way for the same reasons you've given.

I don't give a kwatloo to the United Way, either. They are the only charity organization to be allowed into the workplace. Not only that, but where I work, you are coerced into giving. By that, I mean that the departments are always trying to get 100% participation. Anything less, and you are made to feel as low as pond scum. I stopped giving when the United Way scandal occurred several years ago. No mas.

My dad said the exact same thing about the Red Cross in Europe during the war. The soldiers always ignored the Red Cross and patronized the Sally Ann.

Who needs the United Way, anyways?

They're just middlemen (who've been known to skim)

Give directly.

Several years before my retirement from N.Y.State, I was pressured yearly to give to the United Way campaign. When I asked to see what organizations were receiving benefits from UW and observed that Planned Parenthood was on the list...I stated, "No thank you. I cannot give to an organization that supports abortion." They would pressure me by saying, "You can designate your gift", or "You are going to keep us from getting 100% employee participation". I simply stated, "Drop Planned Parenthood, or I don't give." Despite my actions...it did not effect my retirement whatsoever. United Way is a scandal. I will not support it in any way!
