Hispanic Conservative: Illegal Immigration Bugs Us November 23, 2004

Listen to Rush Read the Monologue Transcribed Below... (audio)

BEGIN TRANSCRIPT

RUSH: Grand Rapids, Michigan, this is Jose. Welcome to the program, sir. I'm glad you waited.

CALLER: Thank you. Thank you very much. These are red state dittos. Rush, I could never understand during the campaign, and still don't, why some people believe that this is an issue for the Hispanic community. I've been working for the Hispanic community -- or with the Hispanic community -- for over 25 years, and I write a little column. I'm the only conservative token Hispanic writer around here, and I feel that is the least of the concern in the Hispanic community is immigration and --

RUSH: Wait, wait, wait a minute. Which is the least of the concerns?

CALLER: Illegal immigration or amnesty or any of those programs. Hispanics voted this time around on the issues that everybody else voted: Security, education, values, et cetera. I don't know, and have not talked to, any Hispanic leader or person who brings up the subject of illegal immigration except --

RUSH: Well --

CALLER: -- those organizations that are aligned with the Democratic Party.

RUSH: Well, that's what I was going to say. They certainly do, and a number of votes were peeled off from those groups this time around as you just mentioned. This is interesting because, you know, the conventional wisdom is that it was Bush's immigration position that softened opposition from the Hispanic community and sent them over to him, and you're making just the exact opposite point, that it had nothing to do with it at all. I would conclude from this then, Jose, that -- would you also say that the people you're talking about, Hispanic voters you're talking about, what is their opinion on this immigration bill and the whole concept anyway, now that they're here and they're citizens? What's their opinion of it? CALLER: Well, first of all, I would tell you that we have to be fair, as conservatives, as to how do we label this, whether it's amnesty or not. You know, I know that some people are upset about it and we really have to be very careful. This could go either way. Like I said, they are not very concerned about it. Actually, it is against the interests of Hispanics born in the United States, and even recent legal immigrants, to have to compete against illegal immigrants.

RUSH: Thank you.

CALLER: So they will not support illegal immigration. That doesn't make any sense. Secondly, the thing I have to say to Republicans is that they do not know the Hispanic community. This is not a racial issue. Hispanics do not consider themselves a race. Hispanics are white. They're black. They're mixed. They're of all races and social backgrounds.

RUSH: No, but it's their supporters on the left who try to make this a racial issue, and let me say, there's a genuine fear -- it's understandable fear from people on the right -- because in the past, the fastest way to have your career ruined and the fastest way to be marginalized was to have somebody call you a racist and have it stick. It tarred and feathered people and it's been a trick that the left has used for as long as I've been commentating about such things and they still try today, particularly on this issue, and that's why it's used.

CALLER: Well, at least you don't have to put up with being called a "Hispanic Uncle Tom" and be relegated to have to write on a free shopper newspaper because no media will employ you unless you are writing about Hispanic topics. Or even just look at your Fox network. Look at the major networks. There are no Hispanic pundits that are conservative. There are no Hispanic conservative writers in any major media, and so the 45% of people who actually step up and voted for Bush are not represented anywhere that I can think of.

RUSH: Hmm. Well, that's interesting and it's probably true. I think it's an interesting point of view, Jose. I'm glad you called. I appreciate your time on this. You know, it stands to reason. This just goes to show how easily we all fall for the conventional wisdom. "Ooooh Bush got 44% of the Hispanic vote! It must be because he has this position supporting whatever, the quasi-amnesty, whatever you want to call it, for illegals," and apparently it may not be true.

... Single issue voting is a dangerous exercise.

I'd generally agree with your assessment AuntB but whenever a reason was given around here as to why most Bush supporters were voting for Bush again it was nearly unanimous, it was his perceived leadership on the war on terror. Rarely were other reasons given.

I suppose it just depends on who gets to define "the single issue' that most people ended up voting for, one could very easily argue. Hope you had a good Thanksgiving Day.

An accurate summation of the current two-party scam.

AN IRREVERSIBLE IMMIGRATION CRISIS

If you read a recent Newsweek Magazine, it featured a front-page picture, "CALIFORNIA IN CRISIS." Last summer, Time Magazine ran, "THE USA IS RUNNING OUT OF ENERGY." Outside Magazine featured, "WE'RE RUNNING OUT OF WATER."

This year, I traveled from northern California to San Francisco. What started out as a pleasant drive became a nightmare of grid locked traffic, sprawl, foreign languages I couldn't understand in my own country, polluted water, $2.59 a gallon gas and filthy air.

California is the ‘canary in the mine’ state indicating ominous foreboding in this country. America stands at a critical crossroads of a dilemma that, once it has grown past our ability to manage it, citizens will suffer an irreversible crisis. U.S. population explodes beyond 'carrying capacity' with each added individual now totaling 293 million in America. Via legal and illegal immigration, the United States grows by four million annually, or, 10,958 per day. Another million U.S. citizen births create a net gain of five million annually added to U.S. soil. That human surge will add in excess of 250 million more Americans soon after mid century. It’s called "population momentum." ~snip~

"Amnesty" (or whatever Dubyuh wants to call it) is not the way to deal with Illegal Immigration. We must insist that our Congresscritters make Dubyuh's immigration "solution" dead on arrival!!

I worked with and held as a good friend a first generation American from Mexico. He was a poster child for the American dream. He raised a beautiful family and taught them how to be American. He and his legally immigrated family believe the illegals are usually scum who can't get legal visas. He is actualy the one who taught me about the illegal immigration problem back in 1988.

" He is actualy the one who taught me about the illegal immigration problem back in 1988."

I married into a lot of legal immigrants, Mexicans, Italians, Slavic, Japanese. They were better Americans than most of the people I grew up around and they are the ones that made me see the illegal problem, and that was a lot of years ago. Uncle Frank (Immigrated from Italy at about 8 years, with $2 in his pocket...by the time he was 50 he owned a good chunk of LA) took us on a visit to TJ. That was about 1975. At the border, coming back into the states, we got pulled aside. The "guard" asked Frank what country he was from.....It is TRUE what they say about Italian's temper, LOL!! Uncle Frank told him in no uncertain terms that he was an "AMERICAN"!!

Last week the Secty. of Defense had this to say:

http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0411/16/ldt.01.html

DOBBS: Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld is warning of the threat of terrorists entering this country through the same routes as those used by illegal aliens. Secretary Rumsfeld, traveling in South America, warned that enemies look for weaknesses and take advantage of them.

DONALD RUMSFELD, SECRETARY OF DEFENSE: The risk is that some of these human-smuggling routes into our country from this hemisphere could be used just as easily for terrorists.

DOBBS: And three million illegal aliens are estimated to be entering this country this year.

Secretary Rumsfeld also said the United States has to be, as he put it, smarter and quicker in securing our borders. The federal government's failure to secure those borders is leading individual states to take action. Arizona's Proposition 200, which limits state benefits for illegals, passed overwhelmingly two weeks ago. Now at least half a dozen other states are considering similar measures.

Framing the discussion in terms of illegal immigration, as opposed to concerns about the overall volume of immigration, either legal or illegal, is what leads to solutions like the "temporary" worker program. Simply creating legal channels for an invasion from a 3rd world country is no solution. We need to start questioning the impact of both legal and illegal immigration.

"In contrast to past centuries, immigration levels are no longer closely tied to the business cycle. This does not mean that economic factors are entirely irrelevant. The higher standard of living in the United States compared with those in most sending-countries almost certainly plays an important role in encouraging immigration. But a much higher standard of living exists even during a recession. Moreover, people come to America for many reasons, including to join family, avoid social or legal obligations, take advantage of America’s social services, and enjoy greater personal and political freedom. Thus, even a prolonged economic downturn is unlikely to have a large impact on immigration levels. It also must be remembered that there has been no major change in the selection criteria used or numerical limits placed on legal immigration, even after the 9/11 attacks. Moreover, immigration enforcement efforts have actually become more lax in recent years.1 Lowering immigration levels would require enforcement of immigration laws and changes to the legal immigration system."

Everyone should read this recent report. One amazing chart shows periods of slowed economy vs. immigration. Immigration has always gone down in those times, not so this time. Illegals are taking the jobs of American citizens.

I agree. Both illegal (priority) and legal immigration (bigger than ever!) should be in any discussions of reform. Instead, the only solution we hear is "make them all legal, and they won't be illegal anymore". Some one on another thread actually said that.

No, but close. There is a deal going on we are not privy to. All we see is the evil aftermath.

we're a safety valve so that corruption can continue on in Mexico

Bingo! We have a winner.

This really is a problem we can't solve. The solution is to be found in Mexico. I had some hope that Fox would start to address the coruption there but it apppears he's not.

If the Republicans feel their hegemony is threatened by public opinion over immigration, they WILL "Do Something" about it.

For my money, I want a Nintendo solution: the Great Wall
of Mexico, built at whatever expense is required, which
kills anyone trying to cross over it.
