Washington, DC – The National Council of La Raza (NCLR), the largest national Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization in the U.S., today welcomed President Bush’s nomination of White House Counsel Alberto Gonzales to succeed John Ashcroft as Attorney General. If confirmed, Gonzales would be the first Hispanic ever to serve as Attorney General.
“We are very encouraged by the Gonzales nomination. We previously criticized the Bush Administration for not having an Hispanic in the cabinet since the departure of former HUD Secretary, now Senator-elect, Mel Martinez. We are pleased that one of the first acts since the President’s reelection both rectifies that situation and marks an historic milestone for the Latino community. Never before has an Hispanic served as head of one of the four major cabinet posts – Secretary of State, Treasury, Defense, and Attorney General,” stated Janet Murguia, NCLR Executive Director and COO.
Murguia also noted Gonzales’ ties to the Hispanic community throughout his career. “Alberto Gonzales served with distinction on the board of directors of one of NCLR’s oldest and most respected affiliates, the Association for the Advancement of Mexican Americans (AAMA) in Houston, Texas. Moreover, during his tenure as White House Counsel, he has been one of the most accessible members of the White House staff to NCLR and other Hispanic organizations,” added Murguia.
Murguia concluded, “We acknowledge that this is the first step of a long confirmation process that requires that his record be fully examined. That being said, Gonzales is a thoughtful, reasonable public servant, a man of his word, and we have every expectation that his nomination will be very well received in the Latino community.”
OK, so they rush around to find someone who can speak more English who can help me, and do it with an apologetic smile, and a couple of them told me they were talking English classes, and thanked me for teaching them the word "handkerchief," (one of those very foreign Germanic words); but that is a mere detail.
So what? The KKK endorsed Reagan in 1984. Doesn't mean Reagan shared their beliefs.

That's silly, I don't know anyone who is actually PRO illegal aliens.
But it is racist to refer to "a race" the "the race" and start an ethnic political organization with "The Race" in its title. Is it not? And is that NOT the point?
People like Charlie Rangel, Sheila Jackson Lee, and Maxine Waters would jump on a soapbox and cry "racism" if anyone ever dared to create a Congressional White Caucus, and lead a filibuster by the Congressional Black Caucus in the halls of American Justice to denounce it. They have convinced you that anything related to racial or ethnic pride must be inherently racist...it isn't.
Say what you will Luis, knowing you, if a group of White congressmen started a "White Caucus" you'd be waving around your race cards and crying racism along with the likes of Charlie Rangel, Sheila Jackson Lee, and Maxine Waters. It's just in your nature to say one thing and do another…whenever it is convenient.
I reserve equal amounts of scorn for La Raza and groups like National Alliance, both who run under the guise of 'race/ethnic pride' while their real goal is overthrowing this country.
With all due respect, I request you think a little more about your answer. You seem like an educated man, so you don't actually think there are no pro illegal alien people here?

I attended LULAC meetings, MECHA,etc. when I was in college. I knew people in La Raza and they reminded me of black muslims but not as angry.

If a group of white congresscritters started a Congressional White Caucus, I'd say that they had some serious balls and cheer them on.

I'd be inclined to give it to them". and your characterization of MECha as “mainstream”. And given the way you consistently defend organizations like NCLR, MECHa and others like it, you leave a very distinct impression that you share their general objectives. Sorry Luis you can't have it both ways.
I don't know anyone in this forum who is pro-illegal aliens.
I do know a whole lot of people who understand the driving issues behind the illegal alien problem, but understanding something does not indicate approval.
Let me rephrase the question, then.
Do you believe there are many who, on this forum, advocate legalizing illigal aliens in this country ?

I know the differences between PACs such as M.E.Ch.A., NCLR, and MALDEF, and racist bigots like La Voz De Aztlan.
I don't particularly agree with a majority of the policies spoused by NCLR, MALDEF, and MEChA, but they are no more outside the mainstream of Chicano politics than the National Urban League is outside the mainstream of African-American politics.
The problem with you is that there ARE two discernible sides, and you want to make them one by lumping everyone under a blanket woven by the words and actions of the lowest common denominator.
And that is YOUR problem, not mine.
