BRISTOL, Tenn. Authorities say a Bristol, Tennessee, police officer responding to a domestic dispute call was shot and killed last night.

Officer Mark Vance arrived on the scene around 9-30. Sergeant Greg Leake said the 30-year-old was shot a short time after he entered the residence.

Police did not elaborate on the domestic dispute, but 26-year-old Nickolus L. Johnson was arrested as the suspected shooter. Leake said charges are pending.

According to police records, Johnson has a criminal history. In 1997, he was charged with malicious wounding in Bristol, Virginia and sentenced to six years in prison.

Vance had been on the force five years.

Very sad.

We never sent a single officer to a domestic dispute.

This is perhaps the worse detail there is. It's a no win situation at best.

I'm not certain that was the case here, but I see no indication otherwise.

Ive read that those domestic dispute calls are the most dangerous.

I have a friend whos a probation officer. He was shot in the chest while doing a home inspection. He's lucky he took the advice of other officers and wore a bulletproof vest that day. My friend knocked on the door and the guy shot through it.

The synopsis at Officer Down memorial page indicates his sidearm was still holstered. It appears he may have had back up officer nearby but he apparently entered the home by himself. This could have played out much better than what it did.

If they have single man RMPs, and they dispatch two..one always gets their first..he hears screams..shouts...he can't wait...and..sadly.....

Very sad.

Domestics are some of the most dangerous calls that a police officer can go to. Emotions run high, there's usually alcohol or drugs involved, and weapons are easily at hand.

I have relatives who are officers. Both have told me they hate it when a domestic dispute or domestic violence call comes in. Those are potentially the most dangerous calls to take.

May Officer Vance rest in peace.

My prayers go out this this officers family.
Having a son that it a cop, I know all the fears a Mother and family have for their police officer.
And their worst fear has come.
God keep him in his tender loving care.
