Nov. 26, 2004 0:00 Boston suburb may become first US city to divest from Israel By HILARY LEILA KRIEGER
BOSTON
Somerville, a community abutting both Boston and Cambridge, could become the first US city to divest from Israel. According to those who track the issue, the city has already distinguished itself as the first place to formally consider a divestment resolution.
The measure stems from alleged Israeli human rights abuses and calls on Somerville's retirement board to rid the city's pension fund of $250,000 of Israel Bonds and other investments in American companies that "manufacture military equipment used in Israel's illegal military occupation," such as Caterpillar and Boeing.

The liberals in Somerville, however, just happen to be less well educated and of lower class.
Just more liberal trash stirring up anti-American, anti-semetic trouble...nothing new...
but,but, what about diversity ???????
they shouldnt mix politics and city invesments..
they should buy stocks and bonds that would reap the best investment for the city.
Ping
Time to wake up you sleepy heads in NY
Pay no attention to anything that comes out of suburban Boston. It's like Cuba with working plumbing and better food.
That's funny because the largest Brazilian evangelical church in the nation is in Somerville.
They have a huge Israeli flag on the stage. I wonder if they know about this.
Sommerville wasn't always like that. There even was once come normal folks in Cabgridge(East Cambridge, hurley st&otis street),but yes you are in fact correct;those two were once known as the "Kremlin on the Charles),or the People's Republic of Cambridge.I gues now Sommervillequalifies as a "workers paradise"(no one with a job that does not involve the "community"...
Since it's his home state do you think the media will be asking him his opinion on this matter?
Boy I wonder how the winter hill gang feels about this, What do you say, Howie?
Political reality in the pension world: Somerville invests its employees' pension assets in the Pension Reserves Investment Management board trust, i.e., the Massachusetts state pension system. No town has large enough chunks of capital to become an institutional investor. They must blend their money with the 334 other towns (think I've got the number right) in Mass. to invest with any degree of responsibility. Somerville could no more accomplish this divestiture than any other town could, because money's money, and the state fund (through various and many money managers) holds various investments in Israel, including individual stocks (Teva Pharmaceuticals, anyone?) and sovereign debt. The "divestiture" types and the unenlightened pols who go along with them don't know anything. One of the pols in the story admits as much.
My working class ex-Navy steel worker uncle, & family, lived in Somerville for decades. What happened?
Guess the leftist college students going to Harvard & MIT up the street... live in all those cramped tenements now.
would they divest from INTC??pentium 4 invented in israel amongst many other high tech items that do america good
Isn't the mayor of Sommerville a homosexual? Or is that the mayor of Cambridge? Anyway, Massachusetts is haven for radical liberals of all stripes.
Thank God, this Jewish conservative lives in a Red State (Ohio). I am horrified, but not surprised.
