"The Fonz" is number 4 on the list...even though he jumped the shark a long time ago...

The Fonz was cool for a while, but he's one of those TV characters that a lot of people grew tired of after a while. He'd make my personal top 50 list, but not my top 20, and certainly not #4...

"Kolchak" was way ahead of its time ... great show, but sadly, short-lived ... used to love the theme song!

Jill Hennesy on L&O when she played Clair what'sername. Brains and looks. Every time I think of her..........I gotta go now

If you haven't been watching "Crossing Jordan", check it out. Jill Hennesy is the title character, and they doll her up a *lot* more than they ever did on L&O.

Yes, lists like these are generally skewed towards newer shows, or those that those of us around 40 are familiar with.
It's amazing how many comments are here about characters already on the list! People, learn how to use "Ctrl F" to find a word on a web page! Or read it first!
Was watching some of the "40-21" show this evening and went to the list. Agree that Marshall Dillon should be higher (and I barely remember that show but know it was huge! For decades!
Agree that Oscar and Felix should be in there, highly ranked. Buffy is not a PC choice. She is a great character. And one that I can watch with my teenage daughter and is mostly a positive role model (until she got kind of slutty). The Top 20 is definitely not very "PC." Only Carrie Bradshaw is that. I also am not a big Seinfeld fan but agree it should be highly ranked. I loved Kolshack but he doesn't deserve to be on this list. Homer is a good pick, not sure Cartman should be so high. Fred Flintstone is missing. Cast of WKRP probably deserves to be on there. It does make sense to lump some of the casts together (which some people have complained about). You couldn't fit everyone on otherwise and some really are great as ensembles. Like the cast of Taxi (besides the 2 who made the list). Latka should be on there. Lt. Data is a great character. Hogan's Heroes should be on for ensemble. Probably each of Bob Newhart's casts (but Laryy and Darryl & Darryl not really enough on their own). Certainly not Bill Daly as Howard Borden! He was pretty lame. Endora is a good one but so is the whole ensemble (the other relatives but mainly her). Ensemble of Jeanie and especially the super hot Barbara Eden. The Addams Family (besides Gomez and Morticia who are listed), too and what about The Brady Bunch? My wife prefers the Partridge Family but the Brady's are American Icons! Who can ever go to the Grand Canyon or Hawaii without thinking of them?! Gilligan's Island cast and Barney Miller cast should be there.
Eddie Haskell is another oversight. Meathead should probably be there on his own.
Why is Mick Belker ahead of the Petrie's and so many others?
My wife says Cliff Huxtable should have been #2 or #3. Yes, Tony Soprano should be there. Rent the DVD's if you don't have HBO! Sometimes, the show is not as good as many make it out to be but Gandolfini/Tony Soprano is amazing.

SHERIFF JOHN, HOBO KELLY: Those were local LA TV personalities. I loved them both! See: http://www.tvparty.com
and http://www.tvparty.com/lostlahobo.html for more. Mr. Rogers is an all-time great but not really a "character" and the list is all prime time, isn't it?

I never watched The Practice so had to look up Ellenor Frutt, but that just goes to show if you don't know the show, how can you judge? People not knowing who Buffy is seems incredible to me!! Not many people watch "The Shield" so what about Vic Mackey? Probably a great character but not much time under his belt.

I almost forgot-- the whole reason I stumbled on this Board was that I was searching to find out who Artie (#96) is. Can anyone tell me?

OK, enough from me. Just remember, you can't please everyone with a list like this and overall, the list ain't bad.
