Wisconsin Hunter Murders Show Need For Effective Assault Weapons Ban—Armed Hunters No Match For SKS Assault Rifle
President Has Power to Fully Ban Import of All Foreign-Made Assault Rifles Such as SKSs And AK-47s

Washington, DC—SKS assault rifles like the one reported to have been used to murder five hunters and wound three others in Wisconsin over the weekend are a primary threat to police, the Violence Policy Center (VPC) reported today. So far in 2004, at least six law enforcement officers have been slain by SKSs. In the wake of the shooting, the VPC called on President George W. Bush today to use the Administration's executive authority over firearm imports to fully ban the import of all foreign-made assault rifles. Such an action would not require Congressional approval. The Bush Administration has specifically authorized the importation of SKS assault rifles from both Yugoslavia and Albania.

"Armed hunters were no match for one person firing an SKS assault rifle," said Kristen Rand, VPC legislative director. "This sad incident illustrates why the SKS is also a leading cop-killing rifle in America today."

Rand pointed out that the SKS assault rifle was not covered by the recently expired 1994 federal assault weapons ban. The VPC criticized the 1994 law as inadequate and favors enactment of a tougher version of the law that would ban the SKS and many other assault weapons that easily slipped through the old law's loopholes.

"Even though the 1994 law was easily circumvented by the gun industry, Congress has failed to move on a strong replacement law. President Bush could, with the stroke of a pen, tighten the import ban and stop the import of all foreign-made assault rifles," Rand said.

She noted that both the President's father, former-President George H.W. Bush, and former-President William J. Clinton stopped the import of hundreds of thousands of assault weapons by using their executive authority under firearms import and trade laws. Under the current Bush Administration, specific foreign-made assault rifles, including some SKSs, have returned to the marketplace.

For more information on the SKS assault rifle and the use of it and other assault weapons against law enforcement personnel, please visit www.vpc.org.

"This sad incident illustrates why the SKS is also a leading cop-killing rifle in America today."

If THAT is the justification for banning it, then there will be no end to calling for one or another rifle to be banned until they are all gone -- for after the first one on the list is gone, then the second leading-cop killing rifle becomes "the leading cop-killing rifle in America today." And the VPC will call for it to be banned as an evil sniper rifle.

There is no way to please these folks and no end to their agenda until all firearms are banned. Don't think just because you own a hunting rifle you are exempt from being in their crosshairs. They have a bead on you too.

I regularly hear this weapon described as an "automatic". Amazing.

We need the SKS rifles. If we outlaw them, they'll fall in the hands of criminals and terrorists. Gun control fails for the same reason that campaign finance reform fails: money will always find a way. We need to fight this.

The will to kill, the chance to shoot, and steadiness under fire have a lot to do with it. There are plenty of dead people in Iraq who were holding AK47s but ended up on the wrong end of the sniper rifle.

This was plain old cold-blooded murder. It had less to do with what he had in his hands than the fact that he wanted to kill and others probably just wanted to get out of there alive.

Here they come boys. Wait till you see the whites of their beady little gun grabbing eyes! Watch the elected Dims on this one and see if they want to get behind another gun grab. I hope so! the issue is poison for them nationally.

"'bout decent, law-abiding, mostly UNARMED hunters shot in the BACK by a crazed killer?"

This is the heart of the matter. The hunters that were murdered approached this killer's territory with wide-eyed naivete, not realizing or considering that they were entering harm's way. They were easy targets for a determined killer. It wouldn't matter at all what rifle the killer was using if the hunters weren't prepared to take him out as cold-bloodedly as he waxed all of them. This is the problem with the idea of using a firearm for self defense. Having a gun means nothing for self defense if you're not prepared to use it. The hunters that were iced didn't realize what they were up against and didn't have the will to kill that their opponent had.

Yep, yet the gun is functionally no different than any semi-auto rifle. Except for maybe the evil spring bayonet.

Anything can kill. Even your own fist can. I can use my car to kill many people. Why not ban cars? Heck, why not ban fists? Where do we draw the line?

Thats one of the reasons why I got a SKS.
I used to hunt with a .30-06 but the damned thing killed my shoulder,
AND tore the deer up quite nastily if your shot wasnt exactly placed. Plus with the SKS, I could afford more ammo to PRACTICE with...so my shots were more often better placed.

Stupid liberals dont know their arse from a hole in the ground.
Just like the handgun clip ban...
I ask you, would you rather be shot once with a .45, or 10 times with a .22
It's a question of the round, the load, & the shooters ability moreso than the capacity of a weapon.
Go shoot competition with http://uspsa.org/ and you will see. A USPSA shooter is running & shooting during a competition...
Under normal circumstances, said shooter could easily outgun half a dozen untrained shooters, and leave them on the ground.

1. The legal versions of the SKS is not an assualt rifle. It's not full auto.

2. Unarmed hunters are no match for an armed ambush.

3. Hell, no one is a match for an ambush unless the ambusher is a really bad shot. If I'm up in a tree, unseen with a .30-06.....nuff said

I love that shirt! But its the honest truth! I cant believe reporters are saying it was the gun, and that the hunters didnt have a chance,Thats bull crap, because I can shoot a gnat off his ear at 400 yards, but if I miss a little, he would lose his noggin, but that would have been alright too!

" "Armed hunters were no match for one person firing an SKS assault rifle..." What are they doing? Starting an arms race among hunters? I can assure the LEOs that if the SKS wasn't used to kill the 6 LEOs, God rest their souls, it would have been another weapon; and perhaps the results would have been more serious.

I bet these hunters didn't have a bullet in the chamber when they ran into the scumbag.I have a 270 Browning BAR semi auto that can do some damage.Do I have to get rid of it so the liberals in NY feel safe? The 257 Weatherby Mag and 7 mm Weatherby Mag are two of my favorite guns. The deer are down 200 yards away as soon as you pull the trigger.

The line is in individual human psyche. Those that knew this man did little to nothing to prevent the disastrous event wrought by his hand. IMO, the guy is a murderer, not a deer hunter.

Wisconsin will lock him up: I think that's lenient and inappropriate in this case.
