Analysis: House Speaker Continues To Marginalize Democrats

Hastert Launches A Partisan Policy

In scuttling major intelligence legislation that he, the president and most lawmakers supported, Speaker J. Dennis Hastert last week enunciated a policy in which Congress will pass bills only if most House Republicans back them, regardless of how many Democrats favor them.

Hastert's position, which is drawing fire from Democrats and some outside groups, is the latest step in a decade-long process of limiting Democrats' influence and running the House virtually as a one-party institution. Republicans earlier barred House Democrats from helping to draft major bills such as the 2003 Medicare revision and this year's intelligence package. Hastert (R-Ill.) now says such bills will reach the House floor, after negotiations with the Senate, only if "the majority of the majority" supports them.

Senators from both parties, leaders of the Sept. 11 commission and others have sharply criticized the policy. The long-debated intelligence bill would now be law, they say, if Hastert and his lieutenants had been humble enough to let a high-profile measure pass with most votes coming from the minority party.

Turnabout is fair play. This is what the Rat majority in the House did to the Republicans for years.

Looks like they're finally taking a page from the book Democrats used for decades for how to act as a majority party in Congress... it's about time, if true!

Just like the Democrats did for 30 some years.
If it's still going on in 2025 I'll be willing to consider their complaints.

And this is different from how the Democrats ran the House of Representatives for 50 years?

That guy on the right scares me. He looks like he's sizing up Hastert for a coffin.

Good for Hastert.

That is good.

For all I care, the unborn and partially born baby murdering Democrats along with their enablers, the mainstream media, can go straight to Hell.

The fate of the nation depends on keeping Democrat fingers
off the laws of the land.

Hastert has smelled the wind, and it ain't blowin' from
Democrat backsides.

Amen, brother....... everytime I think of little Tommy Dashole and his boy friend Foley sitting around living on a pension .... it makes me chuckle. The only thing better will be win Hillary runs for prez. When she gets beat I swear I might have to check into a hospital from rupturing something due to laughter.

Life is good.

Now THAT is the right attitude.

I would be more than willing to work jointly toward a reasonable compromise if Dems were interested. Since they have chosen to be obstructionists all my good will is gone. They need to be humbled.

We need to understand something.

No one can be "fair" to a liberal. That requires something liberals are incapable of - the ability to understand that "fairness" doesn't always mean deference to their stupidity.

Of course, this means that Republicans are in a real pickle. They will once again grasp defeat from the jaws of victory and appoint every liberal they can find to every post available in the entire government.

That's how it usually goes in Washington.

When the Democrats held the house, they frequently locked Republicans out of committee meetings.

Now they whine and howl like the ninnies that they are.

I predicted months ago that a big Bush win with coat tails could bring down the Democrat party.

They held power by handing out power and money to their constituents. Without the ability to vote money to their interest groups they cannot hold their coalition together well.

Things aren't looking too good for them at the moment.
