White House Counsel Alberto Gonzales, President Bush's nominee for attorney general, got the backing of a group that promotes driver's licenses for illegal aliens, no immigration law enforcement by local and state police and amnesty programs broader than the administration's proposal.
The National Council of La Raza, which bills itself as the largest national Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization in the U.S., welcomed the nomination of Gonzales to succeed John Ashcroft.
"We are very encouraged by the Gonzales nomination," said the glowing endorsement by La Raza. "We previously criticized the Bush administration for not having an Hispanic in the cabinet since the departure of former HUD Secretary, now Senator-elect, Mel Martinez. We are pleased that one of the first acts since the presidents re-election both rectifies that situation and marks an historic milestone for the Latino community. Never before has a Hispanic served as head of one of the four major Cabinet posts secretary of State, Treasury, Defense and attorney general," said Janet Murguia, NCLR executive director and chief operating officer.

Ooooops - I had checked Gonzales name in the archieves
and didn't find anything - but I see there was something
here already.
How do I pull this post?
Hit the abuse button and the mods will pull it for you.
According to the current Freep poll, 62% of the folks on FR are "happy" to see Bush replace an American's job with a Mexican. Are you trying to rock the boat or something?
Great, just great.
Alberto Gonzales is not an American?
So what do you have to say about people with names like Petronski, VanDam, Goldstein and Guiliani?
Are they approved since they have lighter skin?
Van Damme's acting skills are insufficient for the AG slot...plus he lacks a law degree.
On the plus side, the tattoo is fitting. ;-)
Alberto Gonzales enlisted in the military when he turned 18 and was on active duty for several years before he was tapped to go to college. He's as red white and blue as any of us. Oh yeah, he was also born in the Great State of Texas in a town called Humble and lived in a two bedroom house that his migrant worker father built with his own two hands. It doesn't get any better than that. The guy is an American success story.
I don't like La Raza, but their support of Gonzales says more about them than it does about him. He's the first Hispanic ever to be nominated for this job. It is a big deal culturally for Hispanics, and La Raza is smart enough to join the parade of supporters.
I didn't know all that about Gonzales.
It only makes me like him more.
But I really don't like those type of comments ("replaced an American with a Mexican") from some who post here.
If this post is true then Gonzales it a member of an organization whose aims are racist and anti-American.
At the very least Gonzales should disassociate himself from La Raza ASAP before taking the AG position.
Still, Gonzales would have been vetted throughly before the president nominated him, so why was this missed?
He's not part of LaRaza, that's why. Did you read the article, or just the responses by a contingent of Forum bottom feeders?
It wasn't missed.
Party and pandering are more important than national security, principles, or sovereignty. It's only treason, keep voting for the party. Bienvinidos, welcome to Atzlan amigos! /sarcasm
The headline says he is a member
The story says he was supported by
If he is a member that is one thing
If he is being supported by...not his fault....
La Raza wont necessarily influence his actions at all.
I'm not a big admirer of WND or Joe Farah's journalistic ethics.
This is fraudulent red meat for ready to consume exploitation in places like FR.
I read the article before I posted, and reread it before this post. I, for one, don't consider Freepers to be "bottom feeders" because they dare to ask questions, but what stands out was this part of the article:
But it wasn't just the historical breakthrough that thrilled La Raza. It was also the fact that he is one of their own.
Now, it may be that Gonzales is not a "card carrying member" per se, that's why people get vetted, but if he's this close to La Raza then the people have a right to know about it.
I smell a skunk
