Israeli officials signal possible change in attitude towards Syria

After an initial dismissal of Syria’s offer to resume talks without conditions, a senior source said, “We must not reject Assad’s proposals again and again”. FM Shalom: Assad would find serious partner if he meets certain conditions.

After an initial dismissal of Syria’s offer to resume peace negotiations without conditions, Israeli officials are signaling a possible change in Jerusalem’s attitude.

According to a senior Israeli official, “We must not again and again reject Assad’s proposals. Even if he is not serious about peace and only wishes to improve his international image, it may be possible to begin a process of talks, which would serve as a cleanser for both sides and enable the prime minister to act freely in the Palestinian arena”.

Contrary to his remarks from Wednesday, Foreign Minister Sylvan Shalom also sounded more placated. “If you believe you are able to lead your nation towards peace with Israel after dozens of years of animosity, why not use your power to prove your intentions by dismantling terror command centers in your country?”, the foreign minister said in a direct message to Assad.

According to Shalom, “If the Syrian leader would return to the negotiating table without conditions, with a real desire for peace backed by taking action against terror, he would find a true and serious partner for peace”.

The Foreign Ministry is now waiting for Assad’s reply. Some Israeli sources expressed concern that the crisis in the latest flurry of peace messages would arise once Syria demands of Israel to carry out a full withdrawal from the Golan Heights.

Only yesterday, Officials close to the prime minister said there was nothing new in Assad’s remarks, and that it was not the first time he offered to resume talks without conditions. They added that Assad cannot speak of peace talks while continuing to “pull the strings of terrorism”.

On Wednesday, UN Middle East envoy Terje Roed-Larson said that Syria was willing to resume peace talks with Israel “without conditions”.

"President Assad has reiterated to me today that he has an outstretched hand to his Israeli counterparts and that he is willing to go to the table without conditions," he told a news conference following talks with the Syrian president and his foreign minister, Farouk al-Sharaa, in Damascus.

That's about the only good reason for these talks that I can think of.

A spokesman for Assad added, however, that Syria's "permanent position" is that talks must resume "from the point they broke off" – namely, former Prime Minister Ehud Barak's offer to withdraw from over 99% of the Golan Heights. Assad's father, previous Syrian dictator Hafez Assad, rejected the offer as "too low."

What's wrong with this picture other than the muslim equivalent of "I voted against it after I voted for it"?
If these SMs* can't even grasp the minor rules of language, or recognize uncompromising contradictions before uttering them, what's the point of ever talking to them?

The Golan heights are gone forever. You lost the wars. Get used to it.
Alternatively, if you use the Golan heights ever again to shell Israeli settlements, prepare to give up your whole useless country next time.

Suddenly N Korea "urgently" wants talks to resume, Syria agrees to "unconditional" talks with Israel and Arafat is dead. This all follows Libya's suddenly seeing the light and deciding the mfg and distribution of WMD is not such a grand idea after all.

The only thing that would make me feel any better would be to find out that we had something to do with Arafat's demise.

The key phrase here IMO is 'without conditions', From a Syrian standpoint they interpret this to mean that they will not accept any conditions placed on themselves as a requirement for commencing negotiations. The 'backed by taking action against terror' is a condition they have repeatedly rejected. It is highly unlikely they will expel or take action against the key militant ogranizations within their borders as a prerequisite for coming to the table for negotiations.

The devil here is in the details. The Syrians seem to be using Arafat styled semantics. Israel seems to be using their same old semantic tactics as well phrasing it as though they have made a shift in their approach, yet the upshot of what is being said is the same thing as it was before.

IMO nothing will come from any of this but a slight attitude adjustment in certain quarters the form of crediting Syria for having appeared to be trying. The overall result? Time bought for Syria to soldify their position further.

Location and Area of The Occupied Golan

The Occupied Golan make up 1% of the total area of Syria, about 1860 km2. Situated to the extreme south western Syria, it overlooks the lower branch of the Yarmuk River on the South, and Jabal Ash-shayk (Mt.Hermon) which draws the Syrian Lebanese boundaries, on the North ,and reaching Tabaraya lake to the South forming a border with Occupied Palestine. To the East lies Al Raquad valley, in Syria. This shows us that Golan lies in the core of Al-Cham countries (Syria, Palestine, Jordan and Lebanon).

This comes from the Syrian web site about the Golan Heights, explaining why it "belongs" to Syria.

For 2 points, children, what is wrong with that main (bold) statement?

The Syrians before, and the Philistines behind; and they shall devour Israel with open mouth. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

Well... Yes there is. But it is not now nor was it ever a country. This topic is neverending. Since this thread appeared this morning, I have spent about two hours chasing down the Golan Heights history, and digressing into the morass that was the League of Nations, WWI and the aftermath, intrigues and outright incompetence shown after the war, when Arab nationalism, Zionism, French intrigues, the need to punish the German empire and oil created problems that we are dealing with to this very day.

Syria, Lebanon, the territory of Palestine and Transjordan were all at different times referred to as the Levant or as Palestine. It is generally agreed that the nation of Palestine might have been created in 1948, had the muslims chosen to create a country instead of destroying a neighboring one: Israel.

Curiously enough, just as Great Britain has owned Gibraltar longer than Spain (as a unified country) did, the Golan has been under Israeli control longer than it was under Syrian control (as an independent country).

While that statement is true as a country the glaring nonsensical concept is that evidently they are willing to negotiate with a country that in their minds does not even exist: Israel.

If Israel goes ahead with this it deserves to cease to exist.

**** Assad and Syria. The Arabs could have had peace at any time in the past 60+ years, but BECAUSE THEY MAKE WAR, there is no peace.
