Congress Passes Pro-Life "Conscience Protection" in Appropriates Bill
Washington,D.C. - Hard working pro-family groups including Family Research Council have an opportunity to give thanks to Congress for agreeing this weekend to pro-life legislation that protects private healthcare providers from being forced to provide for or refer abortions.
The provision, known as the "Hyde-Weldon Conscience Protection Amendment," is named after its House sponsors, Reps. Henry Hyde (R-Ill.) and Dave Weldon (R-Fl.).
"This is a monumental victory in the fight for life. Without this provision pro-life hospitals could be forced to participate in the unconscionable killing of innocent human life. Protecting the choice to not perform abortions is a huge win for right to life supporters and the pro-life medical community," says Tony Perkins, President of Family Research Council.
Current federal law already protects "health care entities" from having to perform or provide for abortions. The Hyde-Weldon Conscience Protection Amendment was needed to prevent interpretation of current law to only protect individual physicians and training programs leaving hospitals, health plans, nurses, and other health care participants with no safeguard.
In the same bill, Congress also banned the patenting of human life, another key win for life. The legislation limits the ability of biotech companies from killing and exploiting human life for economic gain. President Bush's policy not to fund international organizations that support abortion was also upheld, and significant increases in funding for authentic abstinence programs were secured.
Congratulations to all involved. At last, a REAL pro-choice measure.
The battle continues...
Very fine news; thanks for the post!
Yet another bit of good news! Thanks for posting this!
liberals say they want equal rights for all. They say they fight for the downtrodden and oppressed - yet they are more than happy to slaughter millions of the most innocent and defencless members of the human family.
If anyone can make sense of that, please tell...
There is no sense in abortion. One loses their life for the benefit of another. Libbies call that a square deal. Doesn't change what it is though. Nothing short of premeditated murder.
