"Star Trek" playing "Samuel T. Cogley" (as Elisha Cook) in episode: "Court Martial" (episode # 1.20) 2 February 1967

We're yet another generation since we both recognize him from TOS. Most of us who would look at this as our "Elisha Cook" memory are, at least, likely to have seen one of his other roles when one of his films played on TV. In addition to Maltese Falcon (1941), here are a couple of his more memorable roles, at least for me:

Harry's War (1981) .... Sgt. Billy
1941 (1979) (as Elisha Cook) .... The Patron (Dexter)
House on Haunted Hill (1959) (as Elisha Cook) .... Watson Pritchard
Shane (1953) .... Frank 'Stonewall' Torrey
Maltese Falcon, The (1941) .... Wilmer Cook

That's citing only 5 movies from a body of work that spans 57 years and includes over 200 character roles. When Jack Palance killed his character in Shane you really wanted to see Shane blow him away. It was the perfect set up for a movie showdown.

Harry's War is unknown to most people. It's an anti IRS comedy from 1981 that has been ruthlessly suppressed (according to the stories I've heard) by the IRS. As I hear it virtually everyone involved has had their taxes audited every year since the film came out. Not a chance anyone will put it on TV or on DVD!

"You are such a disappointing pair. I prayed so hard for you. It saddens and hurts me that the two young men whom I raised to believe in the ten commandments have returned to me as two thieves, with filthy mouths and bad attitudes. Get out! And don't come back until you've redeemed yourselves."

My mom used to use the "Filthy mouths and baaaaad attitudes" line on me and my brothers growing up. It's now a family favorite.

Casablanca:

Rick to Captain Renault: When it comes to women, you're a true Democrat.

Annina: Monsieur Rick, what kind of a man is Captain Renault?

Rick: Oh, he's just like any other man, only more so.

Shane:

Shane: So you're Jack Wilson.

Jack Wilson: What's that mean to you, Shane?

Shane: I've heard about you.

Jack Wilson: What have you heard, Shane?

Shane: I've heard that you're a low-down Yankee liar.

Jack Wilson: Prove it.

Abbot & Costello's films are pretty funny too.

"No Lou, the candle did not move"...and "I'll bite....no I WILL"

So much great stuff out there....makes one reluctant to see the adolescent productions made in more modern times.

"Boxcars!"

The Bowery Boys are top notch classics too.

Terrible Toes Jones, etc.

Personally I like the crucified singing in "The Life of Brian".

"Always Look on the Bright Side of Life" The mainstream German radio stations actually used to play this in prime-time, and when they did it always gave a good lift to my current mood.

BTW, you may be enough of a lover of strange movies to get this one:

"Don't get officious. You're not yourself when you're officious. That is the curse of a government job."

"Custer was a pussy."

I loved that line, actually, Elliot had the best lines in the movie. BTW, I saw then COL (then CPT) Tony Nadal speak at a military expo. Impressive.
