Women who live in red states helped deliver the 2004 election, but their blue-state sisters are besting them on the map when measuring economic, political and health equity.
The best places for women are Vermont, Connecticut, Minnesota and Washington, the non-partisan Institute for Women's Policy Research said in a report that ranks states by 30 factors including pay rates, education, mortality, health care coverage and political participation.
The worst state for women is Mississippi, followed by South Carolina, Kentucky, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas.
"State wage gaps are most surprising," said economist Heidi Hartmann, head of the non-partisan institute that predicts pay equity is more than 50 years away. "State pay gaps vary so widely, but wherever you go in America, women get shortchanged starting with their paychecks."
Women in Washington, D.C., for instance, earned most, making 92.4 cents for every $1 earned by men for full-time, year-round work, the report said. The wage gap was widest in Wyoming where women earned 66.3 percent of men's wages.
Also, the wage gap widens if race is taken into account. For example:
- Louisiana women earned 68.5 percent of what men earned, but black women in that state earned 48.9 percent of what white men earned.
- Hispanic women made 49 cents or less for every $1 a white man earned in California, Connecticut, Illinois, New Jersey, North Carolina, Rhode Island, Texas, Utah and Washington, D.C.
"Hispanic women are part of the nation's largest, fastest-growing minority, but they have been hardest hit and actually saw the wage gap widen," said Alma Riojas, a top federal personnel officer from Texas who specialized in minority recruitment and retention before retiring to head MANA, a Latina empowerment group.
Hispanic women make $23,200-a-year average pay for full-time, year-round work compared to $27,600 for black women and $30,900 for their white counterparts. Hispanic women's lower levels of education and English language skills contribute to their lower earning power, the study concluded.
This is BS. The cost of living is so damn high in the blue states, meaning higher salaries.
Study: Blue states better for women than red states
Sure, .......if you're a whore.
Does sounds like more of the same...
Red states = stupid, red neck, idiots, knuckle draggers
Blue states = smart, good looking, kind to animals, blah blah blah
When will it end?
Did she controlled with ages, occupations, and marital status?
How do they compute this? Do they take a man and a woman, hired on the same day, for the same job, with the same education at the same college/university, the same job skills, the same resume, and then see who gets paid what? How do they compute it?
What a wonderful exercise in massaging numbers to get the result you want. Did they compare men and women that had the same jobs, or did they just compare men and women, including women that stayed at home to raise the kids? I'd bet the farm on the latter.
Not nice! Some of us are stuck in blue states.
Hmmmm .. let me see .. the Blue State women thought it was A Okay for Clinton to receive blow jobs during office hours
They also didn't bat an eyelash over Clinton being accused of raping Juannite Brodderick
Ummmm ... and Blue State Women have help us how ???
I'm in a blue state, but a red county.
I'm in a blue county/blue state, very sad. We're broke! Too many give-aways. My county may go belly up!! Then we can start over.
okay, everyone, go up to the top and add a keyword...
I will add
"chickenlibsandall"
Gosh, we haven't yet seen enough of these "studies," have we? One gets the impression that the people in blue states need a lot of reasons to feel good about themselves these days.
Heidi Hartmann ... let's see, I only found one of her quotes on en.thinkexist.com but it's very revealing:
"The marriage of Marxism and feminism has been like the marriage of husband and wife depicted in English common law: Marxism and feminism are one, and that one is Marxism"
And, from an article in the Progressive:
A gleefully pugnacious and energetic talker, Hartmann started out by challenging my premise--that mothers desperately need more time to stay home from work so they can be with their children. "Eight weeks was about all I could stand!" she said. She's not about to give up that fight for workplace equality. But neither does she blame people who complain about the time bind."

She's non partisan alright
Political participation? Last I checked, everyone can vote and participate in politics to their heart's content, no matter where you live. Although I'll admit that in blue states you can continue voting after you die.
Wonder if they found a way to measure satisfaction with family life (happy marriage, well-adjusted children, etc.)?
How do they compute this?
They take a college educated professional who never missed a day of work and compare his pay to a minority with a high school dropout and a few kids who works part time at Krogers.
Yeah, me too, and not fun. The stress level alone is toxic!
I know a few Texas women who'd be willing to duke it out with those candyasses up there in Vermont, Connecticut, Minnesota, and Washington. Texas women are tough and damn proud of it.
