Collision of cultures-Hmong and white hunters have had disputes in the woods.

Hunting is a tradition many Hmong have continued to pursue since resettling here from Laos, though not always smoothly.

Some Hmong hunters in the Twin Cities say they have been targets of harassment and intimidation. Some of their white counterparts complain that the former refugees, used to unregulated hunting in their homeland, sometimes fail to comply with modern hunting regulations and wildlife management practices.

"A lot of these hunters are people who have a strong tradition in hunting," said Hmong activist Michael Yang of St. Paul, who joined friends looking for deer on his first hunting trip a few weeks ago. "That was one of the bases of survival back in the old days. You go out there in your farm fields and hunt what you need."

Hunters of all kinds expressed shock Sunday at the arrest of Chai Vang of St. Paul in shootings that killed five people and injured three during a dispute over a deer stand in western Wisconsin. The natural resources departments in Minnesota and Wisconsin, home to more than 75,000 Hmong counted in the 2000 census, have both hired Hmong conservation officers to help bridge the gap between Hmong hunting traditions and today's regulations.

OK, fine, the law is the law, that's obviously a just law, and it needs to be enforced.

I'm willing to go that far.

As long as we understand that this article is, in fact, a "side article": the real issue is that a man killed 5 people, not the refusal of many Hmong to assimilate.

Thats not a safe assumption. The Hmong migration has been spaced out over time, just recently thousand arrived from refugee camps in Thailand..

Even when whites are the victims of mass-murder they are to blame. The best example of the Nazi war-criminal nature of the system in a long time.

The Hmongs fought against the Vietnamese because they HATE them and were paid mercenaries. I see no debt owed to them by the US. They can get line with every other group wanting the green card pot of gold. Of course given the choice of living in the jungle or a package deal to St. Paul from Lutheran Services we all know what they will choose.

That is an incredibly simplistic view of the war in Laos and so wrong it isn't even worth correcting.

I see no debt owed to them by the US.

There is a debt owed by both sides. After the US unceremoniously left, the Hmong, among others, were the ones carrying on the fight against communism in SEA, not the US. They did have plenty of backing from the US government both officially and unofficially. The biggest supporters of the Hmong communities in the US are the former American Soldiers that fought next to them on the ground in Laos. Something to think about.

Of course given the choice of living in the jungle or a package deal to St. Paul from Lutheran Services we all know what they will choose.

They would much prefer going back to their villages up in the mountains in Laos and being able to live a free peaceful life. Unfortunately, they are not able to because of the government there.

Listen, we have the largest number of Hmong in the valley I live in. Among the gangs we have, the most dangerous and violent are their gangs. (according to the PD ) They seem to have no regard for life due to their beliefs, and I am sick of anyone screaming racism everytime they are caught committing a crime.

Hmongs around Fresno have a reputation of taking everything they catch when fishing....regardless of size limits. They just don't get it. There's a reason for limits, but they just don't get it.

Ever been to Florida with several cars on bricks? in See you want to bring up others states but assume your state of florida is immunue ,it's not my friend. It's got problems many problems even with illegal aliens and assimilation.

It was an attempt at humor. Sorry I didn't list every state in the Union... That said, I bet my relatives in central Florida have more cars on bricks than your relatives. :)

I don't care to see the US as a dumping ground for legal or illegal aliens from third world countries, who don't understand our values and laws.

Huh? I never advocated this.

You can live in your wealth suburb and drive your expensive vehicles and enjoy the high life, while middle america and lower income america suffers from this multicultralism crap.

Yawn.

Tensions have been rising for a long time now.

Get in line. Many of us have had a belly full of this government dumping the world on us. This crap is happening all the time.

Had a mid easterner date a good friend of mine sister once.

She declined another date, turning him down.

While at her door one day with bag of groceries in her hand, fumbling for her keys, he walked up and shot her 5 times in the back and head. In custody, this foreign POS told investigators she disrespected him.

They will never go back to Laos. They have moved their entire villages to America and live by the same rules with government benefits. Why should they? A realitive of mine is a teacher in a special school in Minneapolis for teenage mothers. Many of her students are Hmong. There is a serious problem with arranged marriages for young teens. Another thing is that many Hmongs are polygamists. That is supposed to be a bar immigration but in the name of multiculturalism is ignored.
