Linux operating-system producer Linspire Inc. has found another way to challenge Microsoft: it's offering its OpenOffice.org product suite and the Mozilla Foundation's Firefox browser in a single package in retail channels.
Linspire, formerly called Lindows, positions its OOoFf package to directly compete with Microsoft Office. The OpenOffice.org product enables users to create spreadsheets, presentations, and documents using files in popular formats, including .doc, .xls and .ppt. The Linspire product also enables users to utilize the PDF format.
"Our goal with OOoFf is to help get OpenOffice.org and Firefox into every possible distribution channel," said Linspire CEO Michael Robertson in a statement Monday. "As users grow comfortable with these high-quality open-source products, it makes the migration to desktop Linux a much more practical transition."
The combo OOoFf consists of an installation CD-ROM, documentation materials, and Flash tutorials. The software is compatible with Windows 98 and higher and Mac OS X 10.2 and higher.
Firefox has been downloaded by more than 10 million users, and the browser has taken some market share from Microsoft's Internet Explorer. The Linspire Linux-based operating system has been designed for desktop and laptop computers, and the firm said the new Firefox- OOoFf package should help spur the growth of its Linux operating system.
by the way, Firefox doesn't not effectively block pop ups. Just go to drudgereport.com. you will get popups.
Ive never had a pop-up w/ firefox
you will not get not blocked. you can always go around the pop up block features in firefox do to Javascript implementation.
I tested the feature.
It doesn't block 100% of the time.
also, Firefox can be just as fattening as IE on your processes. I just open the firefox and it has taken 25MB. My IE has taken 22MB.
I love screenshots, not a lot of cute icons on those though
Post #12 was made using the "view selection source" facility in Firefox.....
Native IE 6 does not have that capability!
you tell that to your IT manager. 'Hey, can you take out windows and put Fedora in my computer with OpenOffice and Firefox?' They will laugh at you and probably fire you for being so out of touch with reality.
"There isn't really that much you can do with the browser right now. Having a tabs, themes, and few others really ins't evolution. they are just gold plating and illusion of having done something that's not signiicant."
I guess if you don't think that drastically increasing efficiency and managability is really an important trait in your software, then you could say tabbed browsing isn't a significant advancement.
Until, Next Windows OS, we all just have to wait. Even then, there really wouldn't be any "new" technology that will enhance browser greatly.
Now you are just being genuinely silly.
"by the way, Firefox doesn't not effectively block pop ups. Just go to drudgereport.com. you will get popups. "
I just went to drudge and got the usual banner I get when it blocks popups: "Firefox prevented this site from opening a popup window. Click here for options..."
What are you talking about?
Only with Internet Explorer, you can blocked all popups.
Haha, I'm glad they are finally beginning to catch up with opensource.
because of "View Selection Source" feature, i am going to switch all my IE apps into Firefox.
Close - a couple more steps are involved, and Linspire isn't the only one with high hopes. Open Source is much more than Linux.
I have tried, and currently use both OpenOffice and Firefox (IE at the moment), but I am a long way from switching to Linux. If all I needed was a productivity package and a browser I would be a lot closer.
I use IE6 and I would get all kinds of pop-ups with that 'Pop-Up Stopper' download. Does Pop-Up Stopper work with Linux?
The problem of spyware and viruses are so damn severe that I restrict windows from internet access.....
Yeah, I posted a thread using "view selection source" last weekend that had a lot of very similar HTML as #12. It required zero corrections or changes by me -- straight to post.
I just then there with firefox 1.0 and got<p?
Firefox prevented this site from ..... click here for options?" I like firefox, it is now my browser of choice. Linux I have tried over the years, it was pretty nice 10 years ago but today I prefer an American OS, so Windows 2000 is fine with me. I'd like to give free BSD a try, but I can't seem to find out how to get it. Next time I put together a computer I'll try free BSD one more time.
LXRAD, ect...?
No Body uses them. No body. not IBM, SAP, Microsoft, Corel.. ect... no body uses them. I don't know any corporation who uses LXRAD, PerlQt, ect... the fact that I never heard of those names proves that no body uses them.
Borland Kylix is the biggest and best implementation of RAD but no body uses it either. The "BORLAND" made a RAD tool and no body uses it.
Tab browser isn't a significant advancement. It's a simple programming technique. all you do is add Tab control and TabControl1.Add(param). Since Windows 3.11 days. Microsoft doesn't like MDI and that might be the reason why there is not TabControls.
there is no "new" in browser technologies. Name one? Firefox has not added anything new that hasn't been implemented by others.
firefox will block majority of pop ups but some pop ups will escape the popup block features in firefox. believe me, i wanted firefox to block them but it didn't. I was really disappointed. I use firefox but not as much anymore since it doesn't block all the popup features. i certainly don't go to drudgereport.com with it.
Not likely, but Firefox has a builtin capability to block popups.....
I'm on your side. If I had a second computer it would probably be Linux
Yep! I downloaded a freebie. It's early to tell. It has many features though.
some folks disable their popup blocking... and then complain that popups are not being blocked.
go figure.
I PREFER firefox and mozilla for almost all browsing.
ie does a better job of browsing FTP sites and is useful for uploading to them. as of yet my latest version of firefox does not have the ability to ftp up and down.
there is a plugin I am told.
other than that, firefox SEEMS to be more CSS compliant than the latest IE. people fight about it though.
linux, unix, openbsd and debian all are just great.
I don't know what windoze only people do without a real command line to do stuff with.
Yes, Office only cost $299 for whole package.
that's what. $100 a year. that's nothing.
Gas cost $25.00 per tank on my Regular four door car, everytime i fill up.
4 cappacino bottle cost $5.
printer paper cost $18 oer 5000 at Sams.
Internet access (Cable/DSL) cost $50 a month.
Business (Cable/DSL) cost $70 a month.
Phone cost $60 a month.
Cell Phone cost $40 per month for 1000 minutes.
Quickbooks cost $299.
Turbo Tax cost at least $20 per year and you only use it once.
ect...
i mean, compare to everything else, MS Office is cheap.
Have some perspective, will you.
LOL. They point and click.
/sarcasm
A nice way to do it is get a KVM switch ...allows sharing of monitor, keyboard and mouse between 2 (or more with larger switches ) and put Linux on a separate older computer.
