Melee in Chile seen as 'big deal'
Washington Times ^ | 11/23/04 | Jerry Seper and Bill Sammon

White House officials were still shaking their heads in disbelief yesterday that President Bush personally had to rescue a U.S. Secret Service agent from angry Chilean security officials Saturday night.
"This is a pretty big deal," said a senior White House official, who called the incident a "melee."

"I mean, the guy who was supposed to be guarded had to rescue the guy who was supposed to be guarding him."
The official expressed astonishment that Chilean security officials had stopped the No. 2 agent on Mr. Bush's security detail from accompanying the president into a meeting with another world leader, an unprecedented public breach of security arrangements agreed upon in advance.

In contrast to Chile, which rejected Secret Service protocols, Colombia ceded control of 15,000 of its troops to the United States when Mr. Bush visited there yesterday. Colombian President Alvaro Uribe also agreed to allow heavily armed U.S. Navy forces to patrol the waters around Cartegena in rubber boats.

The chances of Chile getting any financial, military or other aid in the near term are probably not very good.

With China spreading largesse to the tune of $100 billion in Latin America, I would guess that there might be a certain lack of worry about lese majeste toward President Bush.

No one wants to assassinate the president of Chile. There are plenty of people worldwide who want to assassinate George Bush and will try to even after George Bush leaves the presidency.

Blame the hard core Jihadists who are heavy into assassination and decapitation strikes as tools of war.

chilean cannot be bribed. believe me on this one. the federal police force down here is, if nothing else, astonishingly honest, which is perhaps unique in south america.

that is why the country is as far along as it is.

their problem is that they take themselves too seriously...

There's always a cover story when there's an incident - to give the authorities a chance to investigate. Something tells me that someone on their side thought they could shame our security people. They didn't count on the President being, well... Presidential!

The advance team should have their testicles left to dry in the Sun

You need a course in enemy identification. The protocols were all worked out. The Chilean guards tried to breach the agreement. That is not the fault of any particular American and don't go blaming your countryment for it. The guilty bastards are some Chilean security folks. Either Chile will pay a price for else those individuals will pay a price, but leave Americans out of this.

Kills me how they think "Cowboy" is a derogatory term.

"They" in this case is the media. Latin Americans are into that machismo thing. Don't you watch NPR? [chuckle]

After the 1901 assassination of President McKinley, Congress directed the Secret Service to provide round-the-clock protection for U.S. presidents, an assignment that quickly became and has remained the agency's primary mission.

The Secret Service reminds me of the Bloodguards Vow to protect the Lords of the Land at all costs in the Thomas Covenant, the Unbeliever series of books. "Summon or Succor."

I watched the tape on H&C last night. The Chileans moved in with the intent to separate W from his SS guard. That is wrong! I loved watching him go into the crowd for his guy.

However, I have never before heard the Secret service referred to as SS. T-men, G-men, revenoors too, but never SS.

I disagree and I'll take a pass on your suggestion. I'm not blaming any agents per se at that event but it was these "protocols" you speak of that were in error and should never have been allowed in the first place.  There was an obvious failure in the 'strategery' at this event.

The advance team and planners are there to guarantee the President's safety and work with area security (wherever that is) to make sure incidents like this don't happen. If they can't guarantee it then the event should not go forward.

For a couple seconds when I saw it live as the President's body was up against that wall of unknowns (Chilean security) I had that John Hinckley flashback where someone pops out of a crowd to reign terror and we all agree that was frightening.

For the President to have to do something like this in the first place means that there was a breakdown somewhere.

"This is a pretty big deal," said a senior White House official, who called the incident a "melee."

So the President was forced to be involved in a melee to get his 'security' guy in the door in a foreign country?  And we bear no responsibility or culpability?  To blame this incident solely on another nation is a failure to assume the responsibility for protecting the President 24/7 under any circumstances.

unprecedented public breach of security arrangements

Think about it. I suggest to you that this problem in the future with these "arrangements" has been "fixed" already.

Hopefully you decided to read the article after you posted that.

Just curious, is that a catty remark? It sounds like a catty remark. If it is a catty remark, what possible purpose could it serve? I mean besides enhancing your own self importance. It would be a shame if you need such self stroking to maintain some semblence of stature and worthiness....in your own mind. It it wasn't a catty remark, disregard.

We do know the answer to that.

We KNOW nothing. We SUSPECT a lot.

Do you think this sort of thing would have happened to a Democrat President? Sincere question here.

I wish I could remember where I saw it to give you the link. It was very interesting to watch.

Ahem, saw it. From #29:

The only thing I would add to the discussion is after watching the tape of ~20 other notables entering the building, none of which had security details.

Would YOU like a link?

As several of us said at the time, this may have been a dry run, or Bush may well have saved himself from assasination.

Just look at how close this unguarded revolver was to our President (7 feet) while the policeman wrested with Bush #1 SS agent...

It doesn't look purple to me (and I wouldn't read anything into it if it was). Red is the color I've heard mention the most, but it's really primarily red and maroon. Here's another view.

Okay, forgive me (I was public school educated) but this question just went straight over my head. What's the significance of purple?
