There is an unusual feature to the second Bush Administration that is extraordinarily important but has been almost entirely overlooked. For the first time in a half-century, a two-term presidency will end without sending out its Vice President to seek a mandate for succession at the next election. Vice President Cheney will not run for the presidency, and everyone knows it. When these eight years are over, the Bush-Cheney Administration will simply close up shop.

"Cheney will probably resign in a couple of years because of his health, and then we will have the next republican candidate."
Excellent observation!
Wow. This would be the best thing to happen in this country in a long time.
Our economy, though the best in the world, is not running on all eight cylinders owed to the impediments to capital formation and work due to the punishment our tax code inflicts on entrepreneurs, employers, and investors.
Not to mention lack of complicity and wasted labor spent on tax preparation due to its complexity....not to mention the graft which the progressive tax creates and fosters within our political system.
In addition, the POOR have the most to gain, as the TURBOCHARGED new economy with increased incentives to work and invest would truly improve with removal of the disincentive employers now have to employ them.
Losers? The tax preparation industry and lobbyists.
"And you know, there's just something about he name "Krauthammer" that is satisfying..."
I think the name means, roughly translated, "German with Big Stick."
For those of you not familiar with the man I want to see as America's 44th President, this guy has a Sanford for President web site as well as this FR thread from last week where you can sign a petition to run Sanford in 2008.
He's young, very fiscally conservative, socially conservative. The National Taxpayer's Union gives him an 'A' rating, the "We Vote Pro-Life" Political Action Committee and the NRA also give him high marks. The American Conservative Union calls him the "most conservative Governor in America."
AMEN & AMEN. That's how you get the job done. Go W!
A man with convictions and determination will will work tirelessly to accomplish that which he see's as right.
"it is amazing what you can achieve when you don't care who gets the credit" - approximation of quote attributed to Ronald Reagan I believe.
What did the name Krauthammer mean originally? Did an ancestor hammer the krauts?
Charles is one of my favorites. Another excellent article.
An accountant friend of mine, who puts country over career, supports a national Sales Tax like the Fair Tax proposal. He says that he can get another job, but we only have one America, despite what John Edwards says.
OH please please please please please please........
It is little remarked that of all the two-term administrations in history, only two sitting presidents - Ronald Reagan and Andrew Jackson - have seen their vice-presidential running mates succeed them in the presidency. OK, add in FDR, who succeeded himself to a third term - but that's it.And it is little noted as well how frequently former governors are elected president, and how seldom senators are. And how rapidly those who attain national office (VP or President) do so after attaining statewide office (governor or senator); if you haven't attained national office within 14 years after becoming a governor, you ain't gonna become president. You become overage in grade (according to which, Jeb Bush won't become POTUS unless he's elected to national office in '08).
He'll be a slightly above average President. Free trade policies, his stupid guest-worker plan for illegals, and massive new government spending will keep him from being the best.
That he is. But my favorite columnist may be overlooking the germ of yin curled up in the yang. Like a tiny grain of rice... ;)
I am praying that "those around the world who were desperately hoping for his replacement and repudiation" ...... and are fearful.......... do not do something very radical as happened on this date (November 22) years ago to another president.
Presidents with such great ideas of change can be targeted. It happens way too often. George must be very careful!
I pray that his people take good care!
Not only that, but an 8-year term of George W. Bush will serve as an exact counterpoint to the 8 years of Bill Clinton, and will make Slick Willie's administration look even worse by comparison. I have no doubt that the Bent One knows and understands this, and it silently seething.
I knew I liked you for a reason. Now I know what it is.
Is he squeaky clean?
The incident with his Secret Service man in Chile didn't help quell my similar fears.
LOL. Except that cows are beef and meat is evil.../sarcasm...
GO BUSH!
Kraut calmly picks up the Democrats' cage and vigorously shakes with both hands!
Charles has such a way with words, telling it like it is.
