After wrestling for nearly three hours with a scalloped hammerhead shark off South Beach, a Fort Lauderdale man reeled in the 12-foot, 582-pounder Sunday not far from where people were swimming. The charter company owner said the average hammerhead is about 7 to 8 pounds, and the one that Farmer caught Sunday was one of the biggest he's ever seen.

The original site has a video of this as well, but for some reason it's not playing on the StoatPuter :-( Here's a pic from it though. |
It must have been feeding on the masses of liberals who were so depressed....they just walked into the sea.......
I figured out why the video wouldn't play...it requires the RealPlayer browser plugin.
"Fire up the coals, I'll bring the lemons and butter."
Calling Michael Moose... Calling Michael Moore rather...
This article with its video if there is, should be included in Farenyikes 9/11 Part II...
The beach-goers on camera pretty much spelled out liberalism and terrorism. (Obscure metaphor warning) Don't worry about the shark, just respect the ocean.
There were allot of sharks where I used to swim, especially hammerheads. I remember the night of my sister's wedding. I pulled off my tux, and myself and three cousins went swimming near the mouth of the ST. Johns River. When I look back on this, it reminds me of the opening scene of "Jaws." Some hot summer nights, I'd go swimming when I was bored. I can't believe I did this stuff.
Here's a clip from the local paper.
"Back in the sixties and seventies shark fishing was allowed on the pier and there were quite a few monsters taken. Stanley Paul caught a 13' 1 " hammerhead shark off of the end one night. But that wasn't the biggest.
Blackie Reasor set the all tackle world record with one that weighed over 700 pounds. There were numerous large sharks caught back then. I even lucked into a dusky shark that measured 12' 2" and was estimated at 650 pounds although I did think he was a little lighter than that."

Dave, We're going to need a bigger boat!
I know...wasn't it just sickening? "Leave the sharks alone and they won't bother you"
ROTFLMAO!! Tell that to all of the surfers and swimmers who are bitten or killed every year. Those kids in the video were morons.
I guess they get the little ones over on the east coast. In the Gulf we commonly see them in the 3-5 foot range and offshore a twelve-footer is certainly no big deal.
He may be talking about a bonnet head shark. They have a very similar shape but they are much smaller than hammerheads and they stay small.

Just curious...I hadn't heard that sharks are very good to eat. Here in the Pacific Northwest, we don't really have sharks in any significant number, we have dogfish which are a relation, but they're regarded as a nuisance and thrown back when caught.
Do people eat a lot of shark? From the linked page: "Bonnethead shark meat is sold commercially. The meat is dark and eaten fresh or dried. "
I haven't eaten shark that I'm aware of, although I did have gator a few times when in Louisiana and Florida.
The shark meat has a texture a lot like swordfish and if properly prepared, it is excellet table fare. Stingray is much better tasting but it's harder to harvest the best parts of the fish due to the way they are built. The wing meat is best but it's mighty thin.
FYI
I fished Ft. Laderdale water for 30 years.. thats bull... MOST hammerheads I've seen are several humdred pounds.. maybe not 500 lbs but several hundred anyway.. at least 150 lbs..
In that case they should feed it a shrimp cocktail appetizer, tie a bib on it and let it go.
Caught a baby hammerhead once and bopped it on the head to get the hook out. When I threw it back in the thing swam around in circles with it's head out of the water attacking the side of the boat.
Saw a large hammerhead once while trolling in the Gulf Stream. He was riding inside a swell so we got a good view of his whole length....he sniffed our bait and wasn't interested, just kept on cruising.
I've eaten shark that I had caught on a fishing trip. It was cleaned/fillet differently than normal fish to avoid the blood lines. It was really good. Cosistancy of a steak, but tastes like fish...of course. Like they say...lemon and butter, and throw in some garlic and parsely.
Hammerhead caught south of you Ping.
