Yet again another brave young man has stepped up to the plate. From one "Airman" to another, God bless and God speed.

Aim High; head shots work wonders.

I have a great deal of affection for the Herc, and our crew capsule was a lot more comfortable than other special mission C-130s. And, in reality, the 15.9 hr msn wasn't that bad, because it was a combat msn over the Balkans, so there was plenty to keep us busy. My ultimate in tedium was a 12-hour "rotater" flight from the southern U.S. to the Azores. We were sending another aircraft to Aviano, so thr AF decided to save some bucks and put a "backend" crew onboard as well. But despite the occasional boring mission, being a "crew dog" was a blast...

In my short career, I have seen so many plans to save bucks used to spend an unnecessary amount of money.

I'm really getting antsy to start real missions. I'm not sure if you're familiar with the whole new Combat Systems Officer thing, but it is the awesome new navigator program for those of us blessed enough to be in the cockpit, but not trusted enough to sit behind the controls. It's more about weapons delivery and electronic warfare than navigation. The Air Force has evolved! Who would have thought it possible?

One bit of advice, which may have come too late, never volunteer for the Indoor Tennis team. Some of my fellow platoon members thought it would be a great way to get out of PT, however, it was the DS's sick way opf getting volunteers for intensive training. I volunteered a couple of times after I found out about it, because I liked the physical aspect of it.

Being a "tad" biased towards the Air Force, I'd say you "done good". But all kidding aside, God Bless you for serving.

Husband gave 24 years to the Army/and Army Guard. So we love all the troops no matter which branch they serve for.

We both look back on basic and can honestly say it is with fondness. It's all in your attitude. It's exhausting but a challenge. An "extreme" challenge to say the least.

Stay positive and you'll be surprised how fast the time will fly.

Again, God Bless!

PS: Waaay back in 1961, I joined the USAF, too. Got out in 1965. Back then, boot camp was at Lackland AFB in Texas...don't have any idea if its still conducted there, or not.

WOW, you were there the exact same time my dad was there for boot camp...we lived in San Antonio for those years, and then off to Nellis AFB in Vegas.

I leave for Basic tommorow so...

I can only guess that you'll have less hair and friends than ever before. Get some turkey. Things will be all right...

Go for it all. I will be U. S. Air Force forever. 43270 means I was a jet engine mechanic. At the 7-level I was able to sign off grounding. conditions. God Bless You and you be fine.

My basic tech school at Lowry was 9 months- 32450 (PMEL), then I flew back for ~4 months for 3 advanced courses. And guess what? I have to get up earlier now than in the AF!

Best of luck to you. My brother did the USAF and hearing him talk about being on the DEW line, I decided to go USN. You are in for an experience you will never forget. Enjoy.
My only piece of advice is that you at least stay in the reserves when you get out. I didn't and then sadly got to an age they wouldn't take me. An E-5 who was in the ET shop with me, is currently an 0-5 in the USNR. He got his degree when he got out, but stayed in the reserves. It was a great decision.
