PARIS Major economic powers agreed in principle to write off billions of dollars of debt for Iraq, officials said Sunday, with France in particular agreeing to compromise as it seeks improved ties with the United States.
The deal was reached at the Paris Club of creditor nations after overnight discussions that stretched into the early hours Sunday, said a well-placed official who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

We are "Forgiving" the debt of one of the richest countries on the face of the earth? It's not as if they can not afford to repay the debts they have incurred. I mean, if they just shipped 6 months of oil at the cost for extracting it (ie no profit added) this would more than cover the costs.
I wonder if Visa/Mastercard would do the same for me?

They know must be a bogus story without jFkerry to work his plan!

Memo from Iraq to Old Europe: Guys, we just went through a decade of indescribable poverty and suffering because you were taking bribes from Saddam to maintain the status quo. The money that you and the UN skimmed off the Oil-for-Food program should more than cover our debt. Keep the change.
Oh, and thanks again for all your invaluable help in liberating us.

The debt was incurred by the megalomaniacal thug we deposed last year and mostly for things which were of no benefit to the people of Iraq. Forgiving a significant part of the debt is part of the process of liberating Iraq and establishing a democratic republic there. And it seems to be a part we can even get the French to help with.
Don't complain.

Complain is allowed.
Let the french, Russians and china write off the debt owed them and then make sure the US gets paid back.
The theft wasn't from no one. . .it was from taxpayers. In france, russia and china, those nations helped the theft and they need to pay it back.
US goodwill was taken advantage of and we should get our money back.

Good news and a shame if MSM buries the story.

"Under the agreement, the Paris Club (search) of 19 creditor nations will write off 80 percent of the $42 billion that Iraq owes them . . ."I'd like to see the breakdown on this. Did all nations forgive 80% each or did some keep more and good ole Uncle Sap forgive 81-100%, bringing the average to 80%?

GO BUSH! France, Germany and Russia fought us all the way when it came to helping us in the Iraq war. Now, they see Bush's strength and they're lining up to curry favor with him. What Bush did took courage. And it worked!
