CAIRO, Egypt — Prime Minister Ayad Allawi's (search) cousin has been released by his kidnappers, the Iraqi leader's office said Saturday. Ghazi Allawi (search), 75, had been abducted by gunmen from his Baghdad home on Nov. 9, along with his wife and his pregnant daughter-in-law.

The prime minister's office had no other details on his release.

The two women were released on Nov. 15. At the time, Al-Jazeera (search) television quoted sources saying they had been freed in Baqouba in central Iraq.

Their kidnappers, who identified themselves as the militant group Ansar al-Jihad, had threatened to behead them unless all Iraqi detainees were released and the siege on the insurgent stronghold of Fallujah halted.

It appears that somebody has figured out that Allawi will even sacrifice his family for a free Iraq.

First Karzhi (sp?) in Afghanistan and now Allawi in Iraq. Theres some real integrity growing in the middle eastern governments.

It's the rise of the cowboys.

I'd love to know what went on here. I KNOW there were no concessions made by Allawi other than, if I get my cousin back alive, you might be able to live a little longer.

I got a feeling this was a bogus story to begin with.It was contrived in an effort to show Allawi's resolve. Not that i mind.

If it was contrived I'm impressed he came up with this disinformation/counterpropaganda ploy. If it was not he just scared the cr** out of a lot of islamofascists by ordering Fooluja to be smashed despite the 'kidnapping'

My admiration grows for our freedom loving allies in Iraq and Afghanistan

"had threatened to behead them unless all Iraqi detainees were released and the siege on the insurgent stronghold of Fallujah halted."

Released on the technicality that the siege has definately halted, nothing left to kill.

I have no proof, but suspect that some pretty harsh assurances were given by Allawi that if the terrorists wanted to play this way, that the new government also knew who THEIR families were as well...

That's the simplest explanation. Allawi planned the "kidnapping" and showed the weak resolve of the pinheads.

If not, it still has the same results!

this is the best news in a long time. my guess is that he knew who did it and sent them a little note with the names and current addresses of all their cousins and other relatives, and that they all shared the same address, Abu Ghraib Prison.

I'd love to know what went on here.

My guess is that the kidnappers got the message that they weren't as annonymous as they had hoped and that it would be difficult for them to protect their own families.

As much as we want democracy and the rule of law to take hold in Iraq, there are probably some unofficial Iraqi ways of doing things that are going to take a while to die out.

bingo!

I am very proud of the allies in the Middle East that President Bush has been cultivating. These will be part of the real foundation for the twentyfirst century.
