A Growing Gender Gap Tests College Admissions

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — When admissions officers for Santa Clara University recruit new freshmen, they do their best to reach the kind of students they'd like to see more of on the Silicon Valley campus: boys.

"We make a special pitch to them to talk about the benefits of Santa Clara, as we do for other underrepresented groups," Charles Nolan, Santa Clara's vice provost for admissions, said of the school's efforts to boost male appli

Girls are better at doing what they are told to do without having to be forced or threatened. Much of college involves jumping through hoops and showing up and boys are more hard headed and difficult, while girls get with the program.

30 years of feminist primary + secondary school teachers, putting down men because of their sex.

look at today's interview with elfriede jelinek, a "nobel prize winner" in today's nyt mag.:

"i describe the relationship between man and woman as a hegelian relationship between master and slave."

30 years of feminism + women are still "slaves"?

i've never known a woman that did not do what she wanted, usally with the support of her father, husband, or if not, the u.s. government.

Why don't they just lower admission standards for men? After all, the courts have already decided that underrepresentation is proof of discrimination. See EEO.

The real divide is in technical vs humanities. I believe biology is the only balanced scientific field (near 50-50), and anything like engineering, computers, physics... it's mainly men.

The boys are probably going into the trades. These days you can do more with a contractor license, then you can with most college degrees.

You will notice that this problem doesn't exist at truly elite schools, where you are expected to think for yourself. All of the most aggressive and intelligent boys are going there, from whence they will move on to top law and business schools.

They will be the ones creating the hoops for everyone to jump through.

This is a result of at least 40 years of hatred towards males by the education establishment.

This is a national security issue. Because white males do well at math and science, the educationalists have dumbed downed and deliberately destroyed the teaching of math and science. Where do we get our engineers? From other countries of of course.

Yea, these dumb males are STILL building America's bridges and skyscrapers. I work with a small group of dumbass males who wire lighting, receptacles, generators, heaters etc for commercial offices full of superior women who haven't got the first clue about alternating current.

We dumbass males could put the nation's brilliant women in the dark and cold so damn fast it would stun them and they couldn't do the first thing to fix it.

We could throw them back a hundred years, in a heartbeat, back before all the microwaves and PC's and hairdryers and dishwashers that have given them so much free time to be self-absorbed and disrespectful toward the men in their lives.

We ought to do it. They've earned it.

I could write a book about electricians who are risking their lives working in hot panels and on hot circuits just so "Sally's" computer doesn't go dark on her for a few precious minutes.

Men in America are fools for letting this feminism get so out of hand.

You're right on there...and no four years of college and thousands of dollars in school loans. Makes me wonder why I bothered to go to college...

As an education major, I studied the issue of the disparity between male and female test scores and male and female class averages. I came across a significant amount of research which observed that male teachers challenged female students more, and female teachers challenged male students more. The research disagreed whether the attitudes which caused this were discriminatory or supportive, or extending from the student or the teacher. But the result was that opposite-gender students received lower classroom scores, worked harder, and achieved higher test scores when given objective tests.

This interested me because the High School I went to was unusual in that a majority of the teachers were male. Girls did more poorly in class, but scored higher on tests.

If this were about an officially recognize victim group, alarms would be going off all over the place. But men are expected to be educated less, socialized worse, and die young. And that's no problem.

you are correct!

there have been several studies recently on the future of blue collar trades, such as plumbing, welding, machinists, etc.

and all will command excellent wages...after training $70,000/year.

one reason is the retirements of the baby boomers beginning now. and another reason is the push to college since the 1960s; many people look down on the trades.

If students complain about the gender mix, it is usually with a sense of humor. "My friends tell me I should switch my major to engineering if I want a boyfriend," joked student government president and religious studies major Annie Selak, citing one of the few mostly male sectors on campus.

When I was at Santa Clara for my MBA, I noticed that most of the MBA program was women. Often women who had already hit the glass ceiling and were trying to break through. Another subset was the women who were breaking away from their husbands and wanted a clean start, and a shiny new degree too.

But I think the article nailed it, no football, (and frankly a down town campus) and the top boys want to go somewhere else. I can't blame them, unless they are looking for girlfriends, then the demographic may pull some lonely guys in.
