I find it very disturbing, that after the Chilean security goons blocked the door, the president appeared to be completely without SS protection. Were there any agents inside beforehand? Not clear from the video. If there were agents inside, why did they let the president return all alone to the doorway to plunge into the fray?

And did you notice the large bus and other cars that went by slowly in the background, while the president was standing just inside the doorway for photos. Were they security?

The whole incident looks worse with each viewing.

The link in my post 153 to the WashTimes article describes how 2 agents, one of them agent #1, were detained, and then I guess it was one of the articles posted on the long thread last night that gave other links re: the other agent being agent #2, but I'm afraid I'd never find that link now.

If I come across it, I'll post the link here.

You have a point. Cheney would make W look like a dove, and Dubya's no dove!

Well, I'm not finding a link now to the article that mentioned both of the guards who are his constant personal guards being stopped from entering.

But if you go to this link of photos that Diogenesis posted on the long thread, you can see that there were at least 2 other guards, besides #1, who were held back.

For a change, I followed some of Strunk's advice:

"Omit needless words! Omit needless words! Omit needless words!"

I try to do it, but my heart is too busy going out to those poor men frozen in the steel tanks... ;-)

Can't answer your question but below is an interesting read. http://usinfo.state.gov/usinfo/Archive/2004/Nov/18-625581.html

"...Particular trade and security issues will be addressed in more depth at the bilateral meetings with the Chilean and Colombian presidents. According to the officials, President Bush will discuss the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) initiative, which seeks to create a free trade zone from Alaska to Argentina. While in Cartagena, Bush will also review progress on "Plan Colombia," an integrated strategy to combat narcotics trafficking, revive the Colombian economy, and strengthen Colombian democratic institutions.

The officials said the administration does not expect formal bilateral initiatives to result from these meetings, stressing that APEC will be the central focus of the president's trip. Nonetheless, they acknowledged that the discussions will touch on a broad range of continuing concerns..."

He's on a mission... spreading democracy to another corrupt region and he wouldn't make this dangerous trip if it lacked value.
I want him back home now... praying.

Cook "low and slow, Weber Grill style"...allows for an adult beverage while you tell the wife to stay out of the arena while mastery is being performed!

Hint: If you go this route, please do NOT screw up the steak...payback's a Mofo.

"welll, of course. after all, if it were a set up pursuant to an assassination attempt, they would have said so right up front, right?

[Did you forget your /sarcasm tag?]

If it had actually been a set-up, it wouldn't have been so obvious, blatant, and clumsy, and it would have resulted in some casualties on one side or the other.

Reason and common sense indicate that this was pure Machismo, Ego - or 'turf war' as another poster put it.

"Actually it goes much further than this."

Of course, you're right. Other nations and terrorists would attempt to use the same tactics in an attempt to embarrass or assassinate W and future presidents.
It could also be seen as having rattled W prior to negotiations, if he had showed any weakness.
(Sidebar: In the past, the Russians were particularly adept at bullying negotiating tactics.  They still are, when it suits their purpose.)

There are many subtle facets to diplomacy, much like a game of chess.  Hidden agendas, one up-man-ship, tactics, and strategy all play their part.  It takes great skill and courage to successfully navigate those treacherous waters.  W is doing a fine job.

"Look how scared the guy to our left looks."

H'mmm, indeed. Perhaps the President was not only 'rescuing' SS, but those who stood to get hurt by him.

I understand the concern, but I think if the SS can get Bush in and out of Iraq on Thanksgiving Day, not to mention Portland, Oregon (laugh), I think they can handle Chile.

Metal detectors are not enough. There should be full body-contour x-rays and chemical detectors.

Better yet, Bush should stay in the U.S.
