Protesters Don't Feel the Love in D.C. [ANSWER: inauguration security is to stifle dissent]

WASHINGTON — Anti-war protesters planning to come to town for President Bush's inauguration in January say they remain undeterred despite reports that Washington, D.C., is going to be a virtual fortress, with unprecedented levels of security, including military forces and every relevant local, state and federal agency on alert.

While the Department of Homeland Security recently designated the Jan. 20 inauguration a National Special Security Event (search), thus putting into place multi-agency security for the presidential swearing-in ceremony, parade and inaugural balls, protest organizers like Brian Becker of ANSWER (search) (Act Now To Stop War And Racism) say the move is less a response to post-Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist threats, and more a way to discourage demonstrators.

"It's not the first time that the Bush administration has used national security and the war on terrorism as a pretext to determine who can exercise free speech and whose free speech rights should be put on the back burner," Becker told FOXNews.com.

"The idea that the Army must be mobilized and the most extreme national security precautions announced three months ahead of time — that's not designed to intimidate terrorists, it's designed to intimidate protesters."

But government officials and security experts say the Bush administration has been correct in instituting hardcore security measures at large, public gatherings after Sept. 11, including at this summer's Democratic National Convention in Boston and Republican National Convention in New York, and at President Reagan's funeral in the nation's capital in June.

"If, God forbid, something happens, no official wants to be the guy in the aftermath, who wants to be the guy who everyone says, 'He didn't do his job, he didn't provide the protection, he is to blame,'" said David Silverberg, editor of HSToday (search), a monthly magazine dedicated to homeland security.

Well seing as under their preferred system gulags would be common, I think that would be a fine solution on how to deal with the ANSWER people.

They really ought to worry about more than the Secret Service. ProtestWarrior will undoubtedly make c.A.N.S.W.E.R. rue the day they stormed into Washington.

A.N.S.W.E.R. is basicly the undergound network that is ready and willing to work on behalf of any terrorist or dictator that wants to do harm to the United States.

I hope all their phones are tapped and their bank accounts scrutinized.

The folks are blood type IB postive (when it comes to sympathy for terrorists)

"like Brian Becker of ANSWER "

I'm going to lose sleep because ANSWER has to stand behind a barricade. Poor fellow.

That is funny, last time I exercised my right to "free-speech" at an cANSWER rally, the head goon (Preston Wood) assaulted me and filed a false charge of battery to cover his clymer...The LAPD still has possession of my bullhorn and I am still looking for an attorney to sue them (I have damning pictures of said event).

Free-speech my ass...These people are left-wing terrorist supporting fascists, in tye-dye sheep's clothing.

...not designed to intimidate terrorists, it's designed to intimidate protesters."

And the problem is????

Seriously, I believe ANSWER and other protest groups do present a terrorist threat. Let them have a fenced-in block to march around in and chant - the MSM will be more than happy to cover them. Just keep them away from the inauguration.

Actually, it'll be the D.C. Chapter of Free Republic (along with our FRiends) manning the barricades that day. We put in permit applications for three places along the parade route last January to help prevent the troubles that occured at the 2001 Inaugural parade.

We'll announce our plans when they're ready. I've been told that the lefties are very concerned about the FReepers having demonstration permits. That's good.

Let's hope for a cold day. Then, it will be perfect for turning the fire hoses on the ANSWER rioters.

Remember where our guys/gals were put during the DNC convention?

Glad to hear it. I'm hoping I'll be able to make it up there to join you guys -- I'm sure our College Republicans group is plotting something.

I was at the first and the protesters went wild all day.
(As wild as one can when it is that freeking cold)
That said the D.C. Police really impressed me. Took care of the little kiddies. I am going again. I am one Texan that feels real safe in the care of the D.C. Police.

I happen to know, and could show pictures, of the cages where conservative protesters were "permitted" to picket at the DNC in Boston, and those cages were the pnly place they could stand!

Since when do we use the military for law enforcement duties? I thought that we didn't use our military for law enforcement. I thought it was an American tradition, and a wise one, to keep civilian and military authority seperate.

Oh wait, i'm sure i'm starting to sound like a leftist loon now right? Little details like this aren't important, right?

I actually saw the District Police in 2000 whaling on the protesters when one of them got out of line.
